UNWANTED: The Komikero Artists Group Podcast #1: All By Myself

Due to some unfortunate technical difficulties, I’m all by myself in the premiere podcast of UNWANTED: Ang Podcast ng Komikero Artists Group. Johnny Danganan, Jonas Diego and I recorded the podcast a few days ago, but the recording turned out to be crap. Since we were recording separately through Skype, the audio was ridiculously uneven. Jonnny’s part was practically unusable. Jonas’s part was slightly better, but was rather unusable as well. Since we were all set to premiere today, but didn’t have time to record together, I decided to go to it on my own. I did, however, have a special guest in the form of Edgar Tadeo.

Ed talks about his current work, his side business, and the taggers on Facebook.

In this podcast I also review Carlo Vergara’s ZsaZsa Zaturnnah: Sa Kalakhang Maynila: Special Preview, as well as Andrew Villar’s Hari. I also talk about Free Comic Book Day, Metro Comic-Con as well as the hot flaming topic of the day: The National Artist Issue.

The Komikero Komiks Podcast

Noticing a lack of audio podcasts on the subject of Philippine Komiks, Johnny Danganan, Jonas Diego and I decided to do what we hope to be are weekly one hour weekly podcasts. Podcasts were difficult for us to do before (we have done several in the past) because we had to meet to do them. Nowadays, all three of us have Skype and we figured we can all do it remotely. Instead of the rambling podcasts we used to do, we hope this one will have a definite structure and programming.

We will feature almost exclusively Philippine made comics since there’s hardly any podcasts out there on this subject matter. Sometimes we could probably talk about Marvel and DC stuff that were written, illustrated, or colored by Filipinos, as well.

The podcasts are created solely to promote and talk about Filipino made komiks, and are not meant to offer hard hitting critical analysis of local releases (someone else can probably do that). But we will try to be fair, and offer congratulations or constructive criticism accordingly. To avoid offending anyone, we will simply not talk about komiks we didn’t like, and only talk about komiks we did like. But take note that if we don’t talk about your comic book, it may be just because we haven’t read it yet. Rest assured that if we read it and liked it, we will talk about it.

This will be an all Tagalog podcast.

We begin on May 6, 2011 and every Friday afterwards! Excited! Yeah!

A few weeks ago I was at the SPUTNIK! comics shop in Cubao, in my opinion the best comics shop for finding independent comics if you want an alternative to all the superhero stuff from Marvel and DC. Not only do they have a wide selection of comics from even the most obscure publishers abroad, they have a selection of local indie titles too.

I recorded a podcast with a good friend of mine, Chez Fidelino, who just happens to be the General Manager of Sputnik! Give a listen below:

Road to Manila Comic-Con Podcast

The Juan Shot Journal has posted an epic two and half hour podcast of the entire talk given at the opening date of the Road to MCC School Tour. This podcast includes insight from the newest Filipino comic book creators including Harvey Tolibao, Carlo Pagulayan, Jay David Ramos, Heubert Michael and many more.

Komikero Comics Podcast #5: The Gang’s All Here!

It’s time again for the Komikero Comics Podcast, this time featuring the gang from the Komikero Artists Group! The guys were over here last May 31 just to hang out. It’s not really a proper Komikero meeting (that’s this June 28 if you wanna come) as we all got drunk with our San Mig lites and doritos. That bottle of lambanog is 3 years old, but it might as well been a prop as no one seemed to want to touch it. WHAT? Some drunken debauchery this turned out to be!

Present were: Jonas Diego and his GF Niknok, Johnny Danganan, Ryan “Raipo” Toledo, Geoff Borgonia, Dexter Entera and April Ricafort.

We talked about a variety of things including the Komikon, The Great Manix Abrera, Wasted and the Wasted movie, Hayden Kho, Jonas Diego’s Portal, FHM, You Tube and copyrighted music, and most important of all we try to answer the question….

The Watchtower Podcast

Note: Nothing to do with Jehovah’s Witnesses. I’ve been listening a lot to The Watchtower Podcast, a comic book podcast on a variety of new North American comic book titles because I think they’re hysterical. Jeff Moss and Donnie Coulter are both comic book fans based in Canada, and their approach to reviewing comic books I find really funny. Each episode is only 30 minutes long, but I’m entertained all throughout. Their 100th episode is particularly hysterical.

Komikero Christmas Podcast: The 2008 That Was

The Komikero gang was coming in on Sunday so I decided to wait until then to do the podcast so we can all participate. Sorry for the mess of a podcast this turned out to be, but if you’ve got nothing to do and you’ve got 57 minutes of your life to waste listening to a bunch of drunks ruminate about 2008, this podcast is for you!

Featured podcasters include Jonas Diego, Johnny Danganan, Arlan Esmeña, Edjee Chozas, Zara Macandili, Rod Andres, Glenn Nosa, Ilyn and myself. Well, since you hear quite a bit of barking somewhere in there, I better include Boney and Milky too.

Podcast is almost entirely in Tagalog. Drunken Tagalog.

We try (operative word: TRY) to talk about the most significant comics events of 2008, hints of 2009, with an interview with inker Edgar Tadeo on working on X-Men: Worlds Apart.

After doing our test audio podcast earlier, we’ve decided to go ahead and do it on a weekly basis. Our podcasts would go up on a Friday or Saturday, and today we agreed that we just had to talk about favorite TV show Doctor Who, right off the bat.

Since this is an *audio* podcast, I’ll stop my typing and just let the thing below do the talking. Podcast is in English and Tagalog.

Komikero Comics Audio Podcast #1

I’m just sitting here uploading a test widescreen video to fit You Tube’s new widescreen format when I thought I’d just go and try doing my first audio podcast. Strictly speaking, it’s my second, but the first one I did with Jonas Diego and Randy Valiente back in 2006 seems to have disappeared so there you go. I talk more about this Podcasting Thing in an earlier post here.

In many ways, this is just a test podcast which I did while sitting here with Ilyn talking like how we always talk. It’s mix of English and Tagalog with a whole bag of geekery thrown in. I don’t want to restrict myself to comics in these podcasts as I would like to go over pretty much all the interests I have from music to film and TV. I’ll most likely do rants about the most important and even the most boring of things. It can really be about anything that my brain farts out.

In this first podcast it’s just me and Ilyn. In future podcsasts I’ll definitely include my friends who come over to visit like Johnny, Arlan, Jonas and we’ll just talk about anything we feel like talking about. And with Johnny, it can be literally ANYTHING. There are still some audio issues in this one, which I hope to resolve in the next one.
