Komikero Comics Podcast #2: Doctor Who
Filed Under Podcast | 3 Comments

After doing our test audio podcast earlier, we’ve decided to go ahead and do it on a weekly basis. Our podcasts would go up on a Friday or Saturday, and today we agreed that we just had to talk about favorite TV show Doctor Who, right off the bat.
Since this is an *audio* podcast, I’ll stop my typing and just let the thing below do the talking. Podcast is in English and Tagalog.

Next year, at the Komikero meeting, let’s record “green” topic. Wehehehe.
I used to read Doctor Who a lot in high school kasi nag-sale nuon sa National Bookstore, mura lang yung mga libro. I almost completed the whole series from the very first Doctor to the fourth one memorably played by Tom Baker. If I remembered correctly, the foreword in one of the books was written by no other than Gene Roddenberry of the Star Trek fame.
I wanted to get into the latest TV iteration by BBC but I held off, afraid that I might get really hooked and addicted to it again just like what happened before when I couldn’t keep myself from reading the books back in high school.
Whenever I can however, I would take a peek at a show just to see how they interpreted all the technology that the good Doctor have, especially his trusty Sonic Screwdriver and the T.A.R.D.I.S., in this 3D rich production we have right now.
Reminiscing about those books, some of the theories and scientific facts that the writers had back then could still hold true today and some don’t, which I find amusing sometimes.
Nice job and congrats on your second podcast, Gerry and Ilyn!
Wow. Where do I begin? Firstly, great podcast guys. I have been a Whovian for quite sometime and it’s just great to hear other people (in the Philippines) talking about Doctor Who. And loving the show! (I can actually feel your enthusiasm through my headphones.)
It’s difficult to choose favorite episodes but I have to agree that the show’s top moments can be found in Human Nature/The Family of Blood, Blink, and The Girl in the Fireplace. That scene in Human Nature/The Family of Blood where the children finally pick up their rifles and start shooting—I’m having goosebumps just thinking about it. It was at once frightening, sad, and foretelling of the children’s future.
I also loved The Doctor Dances from Series 1. Again it was sci-fic, fantasy, romance and drama all overlapping. And that’s why Doctor Who is such a great show: It defies yet becomes all genre, pinned down emotions.
The companions have always provided the heart and moral compass of the Doctor. And all of them in this revamped series were strong, and their journeys were as fun to watch as well.
But I still love Rose. I feel a little cheated that she only got a consolation prize—a “clone” of the Doctor no less.
I also watch Torchwood (which spells out Doctor Who). Though not as consistent as Doctor Who and totally different, more adult in tone, it is still a very well-written show that dwells more on morality and how ordinary people deal with what the Doctor has left behind. Captain Jack is a compelling character and you’ll see that several Torchwood characters debuted in Series 1 of Doctor Who. Torchwood’s Series 2 was a little uneven but the finale makes it all worthwhile.
- There’s also a Catherine Tate Christmas Special so will also watch out for that.
- Do you watch Billie Piper in Secret Diary of a Call Girl? It’s a surprisingly good series that not a lot of American critics get.
- And yes, the British are the shiznit when it comes to well-written TV shows. Life on Mars. No Heroics. Spaced. Lost in Austen. Bonekickers. So much good Brit TV!
Again, I had so much fun listening to your podcasts. More power!
