It started out simple enough. Marvel Comics has finally published the first issue of the much anticipated Marvels 2, the sequel to Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross’ “Marvels” published in 1994. Kurt Busiek also wrote it, and this time Filipino illustrator Jay Anacleto drew it.

Comic Odyssey held a comic book signing at their Robinson’s Galleria branch in Ortigas on December 6, 2008. And here’s the man himself… Jay Anacleto!

People were excited because they realized that Jay was actually based in the Philippines all this time, and that Jay was also there in the flesh. Jay is actually a rare sight at comics conventions and signings, so a lot of people turned up to have not only Marvels 2 signed, but also his earlier comic books like ARIA.

It was all going great… then the SIGNING CRASHERS arrived.

Yeah, EDGAR TADEO and I simply couldn’t allow Jay to sign all those books himself. We just HAD to help him. Delicate fellow that he is. He needs all the help he can get, eyebrows burned from all the late nights he’s had to spend awake just to finish all those gloriously magnificent pencil drawings of his.

Of course, LEINIL FRANCIS YU also turned up to help…

And proceeded to sign all them Skrull comic books. Yep, this invasion isn’t so secret anymore!

And then the place literally SHOOK with the arrival of…

The absolutely awesome (and great) TONY DE ZUNIGA! I just had to get my picture with him! I just HAD TO! I mean… what comic book fan wouldn’t??

Other friends arrived, Jonas Diego and Ariel Atienza:

And of course… the video!

What I like about Comic Odyssey: It has an awesome bargain bin section selling comics for only 20 pesos each. In US currency, that’s around 40 cents.

Some gems I got yesterday includes Amazing Adventures presents “War of the Worlds”, which takes a sequel of the classic HG Wells novel into very alien territory. Not exactly my mug of coffee, but man, the art is awesome. It is, after all, by P. Craig Russel. He’s one of the finest comics illustrators we have today. And his early works back in the 70’s were already terrific.

I also got this comic book “Silverheels”. It’s full color on glossy paper with Amazing art. Seems like a very modern comic book no? But actually, it came out in 1983! The thing was waaay ahead of it’s time in terms of comic book production values. The art, by Scott Hampton (whatever happened to him?) is gorgeous.

Then there’s this prestige format “Gilgamesh” by Jim Starlin, a Boris Karloff “Tales of Mystery”, a couple of Amazing Heroes magazines, one of the best publications about comics during the early 80’s.

“Spawn 185″ isn’t in the bargain bin, but I got it because it’s Whilce Portacio’s first Spawn issue, and his work looks very different here from anything he’s done before. I like it! From what I can tell, most of the pages aren’t inked. And Whilce’s pencil lines look terrific. Todd McFarlane’s “Digital Enchancements” look interesting too. Sorry, I can’t bring myself to call it “Digital Inks” as the credit states. Too insulting to us inkers.

In fairness, some of the panels do look like they were actually inked, specially shots of the Violator in human and monster form. It looks like someone actually did take the tablet to actually draw inks, and other effects on them. That I can call “digital inking”. But the rest? They’re nothing but AWESOME Whilce Portacio pencils. Digitally enhanced.

There’s nothing digital about Tony De Zuniga’s NAKED TRUTH, Tony’s porftfolio of beautiful nude sketches. Also NOT in the bargain bin. You can still get copies of this, as well as other Tony De Zuniga portfolios, at Comic Odyssey at Robinson’s Galleria.

Thanks for the coverage, Gerry. Your videos are always entertaining. A totally different persona versus how I see you at comic events. Too bad I missed one of the biggest signing events this year.

I really miss you all! :-D

When I see these pictures…I just wish I could be there…

…Beside meeting Bella there, I fell in love with the Philippines.

I really miss you all…no matter how sappy that sounds, it’s true.

    I’ll be back someday…
