Leinil Yu Clarifies GMA role in Secret Invasion

The komiks web has been ablaze about GMA’s appearance in Secret Invasion, leading a few people to speculate if GMA is a Skrull or not. Take note that the the comic book does not note that GMA is a Skrull in the story or not.

Leinil Francis Yu, artist on Secret Invasion, posts this clarification on his site:

To clarify misconceptions about the double page spread in Issue 5 particularly the inclusion of GMA, the Philippine president:

Filipino bloggers seem to revel in the fact that “she is a skrull”, heck I thought it was fun as well but it may go out of hand. Tho I may share your views on our current government, this particular instance is quite innocent and is merely a shout out to Filipinos. Heck, Stephen Colbert is there. I think she’s in good company.

The skrulls merely used the likeness of influential/recognizable people/characters to convey their message, and is not a revelation of the identities of skrulls in the Marvel Universe. They may or may not be skrulls. Tony Stark and Reed Richards are in the Savage Lands while this broadcast is happening and this should’ve clearly established this.

The list contains people who I find despicable, who I merely view with indifference and ones who I admire. (feel free to guess which is which).
The only criteria Brian Bendis gave was “influential” in different parts of the world and fields.

    Thanks, Ger! I thought it was funny to let the assumption spread but when a tv station now wants to interview me about it, it has to stop, asap.

    If GMA is a skrull, then Reed Richards is also a skrull. That doesn’t make any sense. I hope people read the comics before blogging about it:) Shameless plug, it’s available in all comic shops around metro manila.

    the skrull is a skrull pretending to be GMA, so it is safe to say that GMA is not a skrull. But if she was abducted by alien skrull then we’re watching x-files, I want to believe :)

    I think it’s a great shout out to all our fellow Pinoys here and abroad. Like it or not, Pres. GMA is a thing we Pinoys have in common.

    Hopefully the local media here pick it up so that people will have more interest and reason to read comic books (and Secret Invasion :))

    I was confused when I saw Leinil’s journal at DeviantArt, is GMA included on the cast of Secret Invasion? I haven’t read the issue yet. haha i found it funny though.

    I really think ‘influential’ is the word for that list of people.

    Steve Jobs (Apple Computers cofounder) is there, you can easily spot him cause of the Apple logo.

    Wow, ka-level na pala ni Madam Auring si GMA in terms of comicbook appearances!

    Medyo natawa ako ng kaunti nung napanood ko sa news ito. Natawa ako sa part na wala pa raw comment ang palace dahil hindi pa nila nababasa ang comics. Kasi, baka ba naman gamitin ni GMA as positive publicity iyong appearance niya sa comic na made in the US tapos alien pala siya dun. Hahaha
