Writing ELMER, Manila Comic-Con, Another Video Contest!
Filed Under Philippine Comics | Comments Off
When this site went down, I went and posted new stuff on my Multiply account, which I can now say will be a back up blog just in case this one goes down. I don’t post on Multiply all the stuff I write here though, but here’s a couple of posts that I put over there the past few days….
Writing Elmer

As of yesterday, I’ve finally finished writing Elmer. The writing for this comic book is quite unusual, but at the very least I tried a bit more professionalism here than I did with Wasted. Wasted was written completely on the fly. I had a general idea of the story, but it was me writing the story as I drew it, writing the dialogue as I was lettering it.
With Elmer, I had a general idea of the story, and I wrote an entire issue before I began drawing it. By writing I mean simply writing all the words that will be in the comic book itself, without any descriptions. I find it a preferable way of writing a comic book script when I’m the one who’s going to draw it. By writing only the captions and dialogue, I can imagine what the comic book will read like in my mind, my imagination filling in the images as I read it. I read this script several times over, making corrections, make additions and deletions, depending on what sounds good. Even as I letter, I make further edits to the dialogue. Right up to the very end when I scan the pages for layout, I still make further edits to the words. The only time I really let go is when I bring the files to the printers.
And so by yesterday, the working script for Elmer #4, the last issue, is finally finished, and I know everything that’s going to happen. When I related the story to Ilyn in bed before we slept, she said that she felt like crying. Hopefully, not because she thought it was terrible. In a way, I too feel great emotion at the end of this, as I always get emotionally involved to any writing I do.
Now that the hard part is over, the harder part begins. Finishing the drawings. In a way, I violated my normal working process for #4 because I already began drawing it when I was only a third of the way through writing the script. I already have a lot of pages drawn, but I still have a lot more to go before I finish it all.
Elmer #4 will have it’s launch a the Manila Comic-Con at Glorietta in October.

Video Contest Whore
Yeah, that’s what I am. I joined the Cream-O Video contest because dammit, I need a new digicam! I hope I win! Click if you wanna see me make an ass of myself. Again.
Video entries have a limit of one minute. I had to wrack my brain to come up with a neat story that could fit in a minute. It was harder than I thought! Hopefully, it’s still comprehensible. Now I know why commercials move so damned fast!
The other video contest I joined is here: It’s The Real Thing! That’s one for Coca-Cola Philippines.
