Creating Comics FAQ

Filed Under Creating Comics | Comments Off

Hello, and thanks for the interest in my Creating Comics series. There would definitely be a lot of questions thrown my way, and this is where I’ll be compiling most of the questions I believe would be useful to all those who visit it.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that there are many ways to learn how to do comics. This is simply MY way of doing it. By writing this down I’m not debunking how other professional artists do it. Nor am I forcing anyone to accept and agree with what I write. I am simply writing down what has worked for me, and how I do it.

Many of these things I have learned from experience. Many of these things I’ve learned through committing mistakes and venturing into artistic boundaries that ultimately proved to be either a success or a failure.

I believe the creation of comics is a process. Like starting an education we have to begin with kinder, then grade school, then high school, then college. We can’t jump ahead to college if we haven’t taken up kinder, grade school and high school yet. The same is true with comics.

With comics we start with the basics. And that is to be good artists first before even trying to learn to be comics artists. The basics is kinder and grade school. Learning how to do comics is high school. Developing styles is college. I believe we can’t jump ahead to styles without learning the basics first, which is the mistake that many young artists today are making.

Keep this in mind when reading my Creating Comics Series. What I write will always be in the context of where I am in my writing. It wouldn’t be appropriate to post questions about artistic styles or inking techniques when I’m still writing about the basics, for instance.

That said, I would suggest you start reading the series from the beginning so you’ll understand the right context in which I’m writing down my thoughts.
