The Marvelous Adventures of the Amazing Dr. Rizal Update

Apologies to everyone who had been waiting for this. This was scheduled to appear in Fudge Magazine last August 2007, soon after the serialization of Humanis Rex finished. But for various reasons it’s publication was delayed. The editors still wanted it and were figuring out a way to make it happen. In the meantime, more than six months had passed while I applied my time and efforts to working on Timawa for The Buzz Magasin, Elmer, and other comics projects.
In the past few months, I’ve been reconsidering what I wanted to do with the Dr. Rizal project, considering the limitations of the 2-page a month publication schedule. If it indeed began with Fudge on August 2007, it won’t finish serialization until August 2009, with the collection coming out perhaps 2010.
The biggest concern was really storytelling. Working on Humanis Rex as a 2-page a month story, with the publication of a collection later on, posed a lot of challenges to make it feel and read as whole and cohesive.

More and more the thought of doing Dr. Rizal as a whole and complete book right off the bat was growing in my mind. If I couldn’t find a publisher for it, I’d do it myself, but in the back of my mind I knew it was going to be insanely expensive to print, oversized and full color as I wanted it. But I feel there’s no other way to tell it. Doing it in parts would most likely affect the storytelling in ways I wouldn’t like.
When a local publisher expressed interest in Dr. Rizal and publish it, I finally decided to take the project off Fudge Magazine’s hands. I’ve spoken with the editors and thankfully enough, they understand. They’re my friends, after all, long LONG before Fudge Magazine.
The great thing about this publisher is that they’re willing to let me do the project the way I want to do it, in the format I want to do it. Since all the pages I’ve done for the project so far are these two pages, plus various spot illustrations, it will take me a while to finish it. I won’t be able to start work on it until I finish Elmer so this thing won’t be anytime soon. But I can definitely say that the book will be out long before 2010, which what would have happened if I serialized it in Fudge.
A year is a long time, and things can still change with this publisher. They might lose interest, they might not. But whatever happens this book is coming out because I’m the one who will never lose interest. I feel more enthusiastic about this project today than when I first heard the first germ of this idea way back in 2000.
In the meantime, it’s back to Elmer Timawa (you wouldn’t want to miss the MAY issue of The Buzz Magasin, I assure you!)

Interesting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This might force me to buy issues of Fudge Magazines in this installment.
He.he. John, di na sya lalabas sa Fudge.
Uh oh! (the result of skipping the details) hahahahahaha….
Oh well, god luck sa publisher na makakuha nito. I must say, unahan na nila bago pa ito makuha ng iba..hahahahaha…
keep us updatd on this Sir!:D
Hi Gerry,
ganda! :)i would have published this if i had the money!!!!! i’m currently reading leon ma guerrero’s “the first filipino”–his rather very interesting take on rizal.
gerry,
just in case timawa concluded and dr. j haven’t gone to press yet, the buzz magasin would gladly have him in our pages.
Rizal as a steampunk Tony Stark? Why didn’t I think of that?! All this time I thought it was going to be a biography or something. Great premise, beautiful art! Can’t wait to read about these marvelous adventures. More power to you sir!

A comics about Rizal…Cool!!! Besides the time machine thingy, will this be straight history or fictional?
At some point in the story, it’s history veers away from ours and from then on it will be completely fiction. But it will be consistent with who Jose Rizal is, and what his character is. It’s an educated guess, based on what we know about Rizal, about what he would do if faced with extraordinary circumstances.
