This coming week the country will slowly come to a grinding halt with the coming of the Holy Week. If you have any bank business, post office and courier business, do them now. Or at the very least early next week, because they’ll all be closed for several days.

Working as a freelancer in comics for more than a decade now, I’ve become accustomed to holidays being just like any other day. I just go about my business as usual, writing, drawing or whatever. It’s not like I was back in school where holidays I get to goof off. Now I can’t… and I don’t even want to. In fact, sometimes work is so urgent that you actually get pissed when you realize Fedex or the banks are closed because of holidays.

I’ll be working all throughout the Holy Week. I don’t have to. I don’t feel like I’m obligated to. But I want to. Unlike the past couple of years when me and Ilyn would retreat to the mountains during this time, I’d rather stay home this time around. Maybe watch Ben Hur and Jesus of Nazareth and stuff like that while I draw. I just don’t feel like going away this year. We might go away some other time this year, but not now.

I’ve been going around online and I found a few interesting stuff….

The Official Rudy Nebres Website
http://www.rudynebres.com/
I think it’s been up a while but I only found it just now. It’s not run by Rudy himself though, but there is a form where you can get in touch with him.

Alex Niño’s Dead Ahead
http://www.wizardworld.com/fconicrvaand.html
Alex Niño is still making comics! He’s currently working on 3 issues of Dead Ahead for Image comics, as well as a sequel to God, the Dyslexic Dog.

The Art of Tony De Zuniga
http://tonydezuniga.com/
By all indications, Tony’s official site.

And as always, Dennis Villegas’ excellent site on the History of Philippine comics continues to be one of the best resources online about this subject.
Pilipino Komiks
http://pilipinokomiks.blogspot.com/
His recent posts include the early works of Ruben Yandoc and Floro Dery.

    Gerry,
Thanks for those links. Wizard World is this weekend? Nandoon pa si Alex Nino, DeZuniga and my friend Ernie Chan. Last year I went, and Zuniga said he’s been trying to persuade Ernie Chan, who lives part-time in China, to come to the event. Mukhang nakumbinsi. Also your favorite Michael Golden is there as well, and also J. Scott-Campbell, Tim Sale, Tim Bradstreet, Marc Silvestri, Philip Tan, and my favorite actress from Buck Rogers, Erin Gray. I have a picture with her that I wanted her to sign. Ang siste, Saturday, today is also the PBA old stars basketball game starting at 11am. Sabay na naman, but I can go tomorrow Sunday for Wizard World, which is a 3-day event. But the worst thing that’s keeping me at home is my gout is acting up and I can’t walk long distances. Wizard World is a big event and requires a lot of walking inside the convention center, not to mention the walk from the parking lot. GRRRRRRR.

    Gerry,
I looked at the Nebres site, and I just remembered, yun mga puno niya ay kay Coching niya kinuha, no doubt about it, looking at the Pulot-Gata cover and the way Nebres draws trees and foliage. However he renders them like Redondo, with brush.

Hello Rod! Crush ko yang si Erin Gray noong araw. Lagi kong napapanood yang Buck Rogers na yan e. :D

    Rod,

Si Nebres is a fusion of COCHING & REDONDO, yung action ki F.V. yung hagod ng brush ki Redondo. But somtimes nao-over rendered niya, naninilim. Mi kasabihang: LESS IS MORE….

    “Mi kasabihang: LESS IS MORE….”

I agree. It’s a case of brush strokes running amuck.
Dahil sa dami ng brushstrokes ay gumugulo tuloy ang drawing.
