During the early days of my site, I had a “Comic Book Art Tips” section. Unfortunately, it was hosted in my old Laguna.net site, which has gone offline when I closed my account. Of course, I could easily re-upload it to Alanguilan.com, but reading through it again, I realized that there’s a lot about it I would change and update.

When I began teaching at Benilde, I began to formalize my ideas about the creation of comics. I’ll be teaching in school for only one term, and it’s unfortunate that I wouldn’t be able to continue. Not wanting to just shelve my curriculum, I thought it would be beneficial and informative to a lot of people if I would further formalize my ideas on comics creation, and write them on this blog one at a time. It would then be a much expanded version of my old “Comic Book Art Tips” section, but far better, and much more informed by my experience in the years since I first wrote it.

After I finish my Black Cat and Timawa deadlines, I’ll start writing it here, and will put together a special menu on the left side of this blog that lists each lesson in order as I post them.

I don’t mean to gush. But I think it’s a very laudable thing for you to do. There are a lot of us out here who really appreciate all that you’ve done and are doing for the comics profession. Myself, being very far from major cities, your website is a real boon. Thanks again, Francis Lim.

    Garro,
That’s definitely an excellent blog about comic illustration by Flory Dery.
Here’s another excellent blog site by David Apatoff, also about illustration in general, with some sprinkling of comic illustration, with examples by Alex Raymond, Norman Rockwell,Frazetta, Toth, etc.

    Gerry,
Maybe your Comic Art Tips can be published in book form too, later on. I sure would like to see the Floro Dery comics lessons in book form. You know like the books already out there: Comics the Marvel Way, How to Ink Comics, How to Draw Manga, etc. I think it’s easier to look and learn from a book than a computer.

Hello Rod, Pao…. I’ve thought about a book. Writing bits of it on my blog from beginning to end is very much like writing a book on an installment basis already, so perhaps if the result is good enough, I’ll think about putting everything together for print. :D

    Rod,

I think Flor would like to see his tips in book form. Why don’t you help him find a publisher there ? tutal magkalapit lang yata ang residence ninyo diyan, magkakahuntahan pa kayo. Ano ang balita ki Rod Benitez ? kumusta ang progress ng renovation mo, tapos na ba ?

    Auggie,
I have not met Floro Dery, though I think we’re just neighbors here. Rody Benitez went back to Manila a few years ago to stay. I have not heard anything new. Given myself a deadline on the renovation – before Christmas.

    Gerry,
That’s the trouble with digital images. Nakakatakot na mawala. Pagnasa-print na it will always be there for people to hold and see, like the golden age komiks we so admire now. Speaking of Golden Age, I went to a Thanksgiving barbecue of an artist friend, who in turn was a close of friend of Mang Pidong (Alfredo Alcala). I could not believe what I saw that was in his possession and inscribed to him by Alcala. Over 50 pages of original art of a complete graphic novel of Conan, the Barbarian, pencilled, inked, and lettered by the great Alcala with each and every page individually signed and dated by him. Truly amazing to see his original work, and so many pages too.
