I Am An Avenger

I’ve always wanted to be in involved in a Secret Wars/Secret Invasion type “Everybody’s Freakin’ HERE!” cover so I was glad Leinil handed me this amazing piece to ink. This the original Avengers in the original Avengers Marvel Universe in a mini series called “I Am An Avenger”. This is the cover to issue #1, which is OUT RIGHT NOW!! It’s an anthology title of what seems to be all ages type of Avengers story. Which I really like. I might even buy the rest of the series because of that.

Ever since I was young, that cover to Secret Wars #1 by Mike Zeck and John Beatty has always blown me away. There was a time I bought an issue of I-don’t-remember-what-Marvel -title it was that had a pristine unlettered copy of that cover on the inside. I wanna scan it, blow it up and hang it on my wall. Because Mike and John go to the Philippines once in a while and we communicate, I just might even ask them to sign it. he.he. To me, it remains as one of the greatest Marvel covers ever published.

So it was an incredible pleasure to be at Marvel and be involved in a similar kind of cover and it was such a pleasure to have finally inked guys like Captain America, Thor, Hercules, Iron Fist, Power Man, Spider-Woman, The Vision, Scarlet Witch, The Falcon, Namor, Spider-Man, Giant Man, Hulk, Iron Man. I have inked versions of these characters before, but they were either Ultimates or other realities type versions.

    Yep, I detect a definite Secret Wars influence there! Takes me back about a quarter century! Nice work. Thumbs up for both you and Leinil for that “modern day” take on a “roll call” cover. Glad you have one of those in your portfolio now. All the best. _Mike
