The Lost Lakan Hive
Filed Under Architecture, My Art, My Comics | 8 Comments
In 1992 I was involved in one of the earliest comic books of the independent komiks movement: Lakan. Unfortunately, Lakan is a comic book that has yet to see publication in spite of the fact that all three issues of it are completely written and drawn.
I was still a practicing Architect at the time when I designed and illustrated the headquarters of the Lakan “baddies” known as “The Hive“. I drew it on tracing paper, and made copies in blueprint because it was simply to large to photocopy.

From top to bottom, the drawing measures 22 inches. I gave copies of this to the artists who would be needing reference to this structure when they drew their pages. One copy was left with Nick Manabat, and was in turn kept for safekeeping by Nick’s dad Mang Alex.
After 18 years I thought I had lost this drawing. The original is lost and I have no blueprint copies. It was only yesterday during Summer Komikon when Mang Alex handed me a bunch of papers from Nick’s files which included this blueprint did I see it again. I was ecstatic! I thought I’d never see this again.
The design was based on San Sebastian Church in Manila. In fact, you can see the church itself at the bottom right of the drawing. I had the idea that the alien baddies of Lakan appropriated the church and mutated their “Hive” from it, growing it to abnormal proportions.
Thanks to Mang Alex Manabat for giving this back to me!

Damn. Mababaliw mga artist nito kung ganyan reference ng building.
Probably not Nick. Damn I miss him…
