Carlos “Charlie” Baldorado, Klasik Komiks #2

Charlie Baldorado sent me an email inquiring about the new komiks being released by Sterling. It was a pleasant surprise to receive an email from Charlie, whose work I’ve only recently come across (thanks to KC Kordero’s collection). I really like Charlie’s art and if he is still drawing anywhere near like the ones he’s drawn in the images uploaded here, his art really should be seen.

I hope he gets to be included into the stable of artists in Carlo Caparas’ komiks because as much as there are people there who are really putting themselves into their work (specially Hal Santiago), quite honestly, there are also a few who are simply phoning it in. If this will be part of the revival of komiks, I hope they do get more people who are still passionate about the craft, and not do it because it’s just a job.

Anyway, here’s more of Charlie’s work, this time from Hiwaga Komiks #629, Sept. 11, 1974:

Klasik Komiks #2 finally arrived in San Pablo, separate from the 4 other Caparas Komiks of the line. I heard that it was the same in other areas. Hal Santiago shows us who’s the boss. His depiction of a giant crocodile is so great to look at. I contemplated visiting him last Saturday after my class, but I had to rush off to meet someone. I’ll definitely stop by sometime soon.

Once again, I thought Nerissa Cabral and Louie Celerio’s “Pagkislap ng mga Tala” is a compelling read for me. I thought it was pretty well written and captures very well the kind of situation any family faces in time of great need. This is a kind of story that should belong in OFW Super Stories instead of Klasik Komiks precisely because it tackles the issues at the very heart of any OFW family. For Hal’s art and Nerissa’s story I’ll continue to buy this title.

I saw something rather curious and funny with this week’s KROKO though. It reads “Story and Directed by: Carlo J. Caparas”.

OK, Directed By? Essays blossomed in my head like a buffalo stampede in comment to this, but I realized I had another deadline, so I’m not going to be touching this one. I look at it again and I think, yeah, well, whatever. Sabi mo e.

However, if the use of this is insisted, then please at least say it right. Saying “Written and Directed by” or “Story and Direction by” sounds about right. Saying “Story and Directed by” is just… well…unbecoming of a writer. Any writer at that.

Also, I greatly suspect that one of the artists here had a Dave Gibbons comic book, probably Watchmen, beside him as he drew. I’m not saying who it is, but the sharp eyed among you will probably spot it.

    The “story and directed by” also appears in the first installment. Nasapawan lang yata ng “official greatest illustrator” kaya di napag-usapan. There’s evidence in the other titles that the editor(s) aren’t doing a very good job (may isang kwento nandoon pa ang written comments ng editor).

    I don’t know about the drawing of the crocodile though — a non-artist friend of mine who read the comics commented that the face looks more like that of a lizard or snake.

    Yung story and directed ay, there seems something there that meets the eye. Palagay ko ang tinatarget talaga ni CJC eh movie rights. He is looking forward to see his script segues into a movie. Yun ang nakukuha kong vibes.

    Tungkol sa drowing ng buwaya, yeah, parang kulang siya sa reference ng crocodelius porosus sp.

    Nagresearch kaya si CJC kung bakit ganito kalaki ang size ng buawaya niya?

    WALA tayong ganito kalalaking buwaya sa Pilipinas.

    Basing upon the drawing, this croc is Sarcosuchus, now extinct. When fully mature, Sarcosuchus was believed to be as long as a city bus (11.2–12.2 meters or 37–40 ft) and weighed up to 8 tons (8.75 short tons). The largest living crocodilian, the saltwater crocodile, is less than two-thirds of that length (6.3 meters or 20.6 ft is the longest confirmed individual) and a small fraction of the weight (1,200 kg, or 1.3 tons).
    Makikita lamang natin ang ganitong size ng mga buwaya ngayon ay sa ilog na kung saan nagtatagpo ang SUDAN at Mediterranean sea sa KARTHOUM EGYPT.

    Tarig, a friend of mine from Sudan, told me that these buwayas eat a lot of people every year.

    Now, now. Paano nakarating diyan sa RP itong mga buwayang ito? Ewan, baka may nag-smuggled ng eggs nito from Sudan?

    Very classic artstyle ni Charlie Baldorado. I like it, reminded me of the early 80′s comics when I first started to read komiks.

    “Story & Directed by…” – ‘Di ako writer or fluent sa English pero parang mali nga. Hehehehe. Napag-aralan nga ito sa English namin nung college and late highschool.

    Anyway…ala pa rin akong copy ‘ni isang title. Haha!

    By the way, I’ve seen yung ibang pages ni Lan Medina sa…Kadenang Rosas (???)…HANEP! Simple pero ganda ng mga figures (kasi love scene). Para sa #6 yata yun. (Di ko sasabihin kung san ko nakita.) Wehehehe!

    Galing daw sa Surigao, so let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. Di ba ang Surigao, eh malapit na sa Sumatra, doon sa mysterious island that time forgot, kung saan ang pugad ni Kingkong at iba pang giant predators ? siguro nag migrate itong si Kroko pa Mindanao, when that Island was getting to close for comfort sa mga kapareho niyang predators. Yun ang aking nakikikitang logical explanation. But you are right, wala tayong giant crocs dito, sa Nile, sa sa iba pang location sa Africa na madalas kong makita sa National Geographic. Palagay ko mi subscription din siguro si CJC sa Geographic.

    ano ba? katha ito. ibig sabihin batay sa imahinasyon kaya hindi kailangang nakabatay sa tunay na buhay at realidad. Fantastikong kuwento ito, OK? Suspension of disbelief ika nga.

    At sa totoo lang, noong unang panahon, noong hindi pa nabababoy ang mga ilog natin, maraming mga buwaya sa Pilipinas. Tradisyon noon sa mga mamamangka sa Ilog Pasig, halimbawa, na mag-alay ng pagkain sa mga buwaya upang hindi sila gambalain. At kung maaalala natin sa Noli, may buwaya din dun. At marami mga kuwento katatakutan tungkol sa mga buwaya ang nakalimutan na dahil namatay na ang mga buwayang dapat katakutan. Ito marahil tradisyong “literary” ang sinusundan ng komiks at hindi ang mga “literal” na impormasyon lamang.

    May bagong series sa GMA 7 si Caparas. Yung KAMANDAG. Si Richard Gutierrez ang bida. Story lang ang gawa niya at hindi directed by. :P

    Noong bata ako nalilito ako sa gawa nina Arnel Avetria, Dodge Sanchez at Charlie Baldorado. Pero nung medyo natuto na akong maka-appreciate ng artwork sa komiks, nakita kong si Charlie Baldorado ang pinaka-standout sa ganitong style ng inking.

    …sa tubig pa siguro…pero sa ere? “story and directed by CPC” indeed! Nakakawindang!

    Mi amigo, ano’ng ginagawa mo rito?

    My friend, wala namang nagrereklamo sa mga buwaya sa RP. Meron tayo noon at napakarami. Pero KINATAY NANG KINATAY ng populasyon kaya nagkaubusan. Iyan ang napala ng ating bansa sa walang habas na pagkatay sa wildlife. Ang KALAW, na napakaganda nahan na ito? Nawala na rin dahil hindi natin hinumpayan sa pagpatay.

    Naghahanap lang ako ng paliwanag kung saan nagbuhat itong gigantic Kroko na ito. As what Auggie said, sa Surigao daw. Eh, di sa Surigao, no more IFS & BUTS.

    Ginawa rin ito ni Ruben Yandoc noon sa Kislap, si SAWA. Pumulupot pa nga sa sumasabog na bulkan itong si sawa para iligtas ang buong bayan. WAKAS.

    Boa Constrictor naman ito at napakalaki. Sa BUCAWE, Bulacan naman yata ito nagbuhat, sans baylarinas y putitas:)

    Ay, makapanood na nga ng THEY WAIT. A horror feature.

    Ok lang yung malaki — kasi yun yung fantastic premise eh… parang King Kong. Yun lang talagang hindi mukhang buwaya yung mukha ng buwaya.

    Magaling naman dapat si Hal Santiago sa reference diba? Kuhang-kuha nga niya yung mukha ni Gerry doon sa isa pang kwento niya… hehehe…

    paumanhin kung nagtunog akong arogante sa una kong komento. Gusto ko lang sabihin na hindi naman kailangang sobrang busisiin ang mga detalye ng isang gawa kung hindi naman nakadadagdag sa ating pag-unawa at pagtanggap sa isang akda. Pero, syempre, nag-overreact ako. Yun lang. Paumanhin sa mga nainsulto ko at sa may-ari ng blog na ito.

    Kaya pala dini-direct na rin ang komiks ngayon. Parang sa isang komiks seminar, may nagtanong na participant kung paano nalalagyan ng “tunog” ang komiks. Ang sagot: ini-spell lang ang gusto mong maging sound effect like “PIK”, “PAK”, “BOOM”. Pero hindi pa nagagawa ang komiks na “may tunog”.

    About Capural’s intention, sa umpisa’t umpisa pa lang ay “mababasa” na ito. Ini-emphasize niya palagi ang (ayon sa kanya’y) correlation ng komiks at pelikula. Ex. — nang “namatay” ang komiks, namatay din ang pelikula. Pag “binuhay” ang komiks buhay din ang showbiz. Noon, nasa pelikula nga naman talaga ang pera at glamour. Mataas ang rate niya sa komiks pero nothing pa rin ito kumpara sa milyones na puwede niyang kitain overnight sa pelikula.

    Correct, may correlation ang komiks at pelikula pero not to the extent na iniisip niya. Laluna sa panahon ngayon. Let’s look at komiks-making first as an “art and endeavor” that is distinct and separate from the “art and endeavor” of movie-making. Isa pa, parang “cancerous tumor” ang problema sa piracy sa movie industry kumpara sa piracy sa printed industries which include komiks. Mas mahirap pa ring ipirata ang mga printed matters at mas madalas na vulnerable dito ay ang mga sobrang mahal ang presyo tulad ng medical and law books. Mas magkakaproblema ang komikero, laluna ang mga small player, kapag ang kapitalista mismo ang pumirata sa mga likhang-isip niya.

    Pwede ring TV imbes na pelikula. Ang mga teleserye na lokal hindi prone to piracy.
