Deng Coy Miel sent me a message informing me of Edd Aragon’s blog, who many of you would probably remember as the cartoonist for “Bric n’ Brac” and “Sic” from Manila Bulletin in the 70′s. Edd is also regarded as one of the founders of the Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas (SKP), along with Larry Alcala, et al. Thanks Miel!

I still check out Liwayway as much as I can and I’m glad to see the komiks section here is still going strong. In fact, I can swear that they got more pages for komiks now than they did before. The art on the left is by Nar Cantillo, who has been doing spot illustrations and one shot stories for Liwayway for quite some time.
I think it’s great that a lot of Liwayway artists get the opportunity to color their own work because it always ends up with far more aesthetically pleasing art. The one artist who I think do this extremely well is the ever dependable, and always impressive Jun Lofamia.
It’s great to see that Mang Jun has finally taken to coloring his own comic book work (on the right). He has been doing spectacular spot illustrations for the magazine, but he has resisted coloring his own comic book work for quite some time. I do remember asking if he would ever consider coloring, not just his spot illustrations, but his comic book work. I had said that it would look a lot better.
It’s also great that Liwayay is now featuring more artwork, even if they’re insets, on the covers, which they never did on a regular basis previously. To me that’s an indication that komiks is slowly becoming much more of a selling point than they did before.
I gotta say, I really like Rod Lofamia‘s drawings (on the left). I remember him returning to komiks with “Calimugtong” right on the pages of Liwayway a few years ago, and he brought a certain quality to the drawings that few artists at the time seem to employ. Unfortunately, that series was never finished, but it’s great to see Rod still do other things for the magazine. His work is very simple, and yet I really like the bold strokes and and how well structured the faces and figures are.
This drawing comes from “Lukrecia”, written by Rico Rival.
Other artists who have returned to komiks in recent weeks have been Louie and Joey Celerio who both have illustrated short stories in this issue of Liwayay, and I believe both of them also do work for Sterling. I have a large collection of komiks from the 1970′s, lent to me by KC Cordero with some really impressive work from both Celerio brothers which I’ll be posting here soon.

Gerry,
Sometime back I also informed you of Edd Aragon’s comics called “JEP” about a Pinoy who just arrived in Australia. Here’s the link to Jep:
