New artists making their debut in Sterling’s new komiks line include Thor Infante (wasn’t he simply TOR back in the day?) who is responsible for the cover of Gwapo Komiks above as well as illustrating Lumaban Ka, Totoy Bato, written by Carlo J. Caparas. Dell Barras also makes his debut in Super Funny Komix, illustrating Blanco Negro, also written by Caparas.
Unfortunately, I can’t comment on this week’s Klasik Komiks because only 4 of the 5 titles arrived here in San Pablo City, and Klasik Komiks was the one that didn’t make it. I have heard that this was the best selling title of all 5. I kind of expected it, seeing the kind of story Kroko was, and how Hal Santiago illustrated it.
My favorite this week is still Hal Santiago’s Parcenet-Isolde from Estudyante Komiks. Mang Hal is still thoroughly impressive by creating all this terrific artwork, with a semi paralyzed hand, to boot. He’s the man, is say!
If I can make a suggestion to the Editor, I think you’re missing an opportunity by not building up Lan Medina. In the 2nd part of his story, Hiwaga ng Cadena de Amor, written by Caparas, Caparas’s name is very prominent, while Lan’s is microscopic in the lower corner. I’m not sure if you guys fully appreciate who Lan Medina is. He won’t boast about it himself, because I think Lan is that kind of guy, but he’s easily the most popular guy you have working on all of these 5 comics, and yes, that even includes Carlo J.
Lan Medina is an Eisner Award Winner, and his work is known all over the world. If you can allow subtitles to Carlo J (Presidential Medal of Merit) and Hal Santiago (The Official Philippines’ Greatest Illustrator) then I think it would only be in your best interest to enlarge Lan’s name to the same size as Caparas’ and then attach “Eisner Award Awardee, Best Serialized Story, 2003, USA”. That would surely impress a lot of the fans reading the komiks, and probably even push more people to check it out. The Eisners is tantamount to an Oscar in comics. This is an International award, and your guy Lan has won it. This is no lightweight stuff. Be proud to have him in there and banner his accomplishments.
Can anyone grab me a copy of this week’s Klasik Komiks? I’ll gladly pay you. I’d hate to miss part 2 of Kroko!
