My introduction to the world of Filipino Comics (and to komikero.com) was recent enough that I was, until just now, I didn’t know Arlan Esmeña had cancer.

So at KomikStrip, I was actually hoping to meet him. When I read the copy of Boldstars that I bought there, I assumed I’d meet him at some later venue and I could tell him how much I looked forward to his future work.

That’s not going to happen now, which is sad. But on the other hand, I’m glad that the subject matter of the work he did on Boldstars means that we still now have a great venue for discovering his subtle linework, the fluid dynamism of his panels, and his ability to make a character and a moment truly come alive.

We fans have suffered a great loss, po, Mr. Esmeña. Maraming maraming salamat po, and may your rest indeed be peaceful.

I only knew from Arlan from his work from boldstar. I never got the chance to read cause i was running low on cash at the time but I will support the wonderful medium that is Filipino comics. Thank you Arlan for giving us something beautiful to look forward and also inspire a thousand and 1 people here in the Philippines.

Got the news last nyt while listening over the Rock Ed Radio on NU 107 (it was fun listening to the show) and all I can say is that Arlan is a sorry loss for the legion of comic book illustrators and for the people who appreciate his work in Bold Stars… At least, he was able to do what he loved doing (illustrating comics) before joining our Creator. Maraming salamat, Arlan!

I wish I had known him more. But of the instances that we got to hang out during komikero meets and convention attendances Arlan was always full of smiles that shine through his eyes.
