Filipino Komiks Illustrator Joey Celerio passed away last Friday, January 15, 2010. He was one of the more popular illustrators to emerge during the 1970’s when most of the old masters have passed on, moved to the US or have retired and moved on to other things.

Below is only a few of the artwork he has left for us, artwork that may be described as ornate, dynamic, and best of all unique.

Thanks to KC Cordero.

    Gerry:

Joey Celerio’s early works seems to have been inspired by Emil Rodriguez’ drawings.

I have some old komiks showing this (including the dots and dashes that Emil was so known to use in his backgrounds), and even if he had developed his own unique style, the expression and flowing drapery remained similar to Rodriguez and it made Joey’s work more dynamic.

    Gerry, JM,
There’s a bit of Nino in his fantasy illustrations, and his cartoony exaggerations are excellent. He draws better women than Nino, though, a sort of Achilles Heel by many artists. Wasn’t Nino influenced by Emil Rodriguez too? I don’t seem to have seen his work in American comics. He could have made it big here. It seems to me his style would fit perfectly into many of the Marvel/DC Superheroes.

I came across info that Joey worked on Vampirella, but it turns out it might have been unpublished.

Puro REX Komiks!
