In this photo from 1957, Nestor Redondo is more than 10 years younger than I am now. Time takes no prisoners.

Sana may gumawa rin series na ganito para sa illustrator at cartoonist sa magazine.

I’m older than Redondo was when he was making his mark and I’m not even half as good an artist. *sigh* Makes you think “what the heck am I doing with my life”? -_-

I had several instances to see Mr. Redondo in his house in Bulacan where many young aspiring artists went regularly to learn. He was always busy with work and was constantly “chained” to his drawing board. He eventually developed hypertension and it took a toll on his health. If he didn’t have high blood pressure, he probably would have lived as old as Mr. Jess Jodloman.

But there was another artist colleague of Redondo (also very creative and well-known), who did worse than Mr. Redondo when it comes to staying healthy. When I was there at his house with two other young artists, I just couldn’t believe what I found out. This guy would draw non-stop, day and night (sometimes not sleeping for two or three days), and what’s shocking was: he also imbibed alcohol non-stop. He, too, died not so old.

So for young komiks artists – we should end the VICIOUS CYCLE of forgetting to take care of our health. Without a healthy body, we might end up incapacitated, and the end result would be not being able to enjoy the one thing we like to do: drawing, because we might just end up sick or dead at a young age. Eat healthy, exercise regularly and always think positive.

    Borgy:

Don’t worry about your age. You’re still young. Remember Grandma Moses?

    ‘Nough said. :)

    Auggie,
Nestor Redondo was tall, dark and handsome, at least when I met him in his younger days.
