Life and Art of Francisco V. Coching + Botong Book Launch (Updated)
Filed Under Filipino Artists, Philippine Comics | 24 Comments
Reminder! The double launching of Francisco V. Coching and Botong Francsico books happens TODAY, December 11, 6:30pm at National Museum in Manila.
Anyone going? Let me know! I’m still not sure if I can go as I’m still feeling under the weather. I’ll see! This weekend will be a pretty busy one and I want to conserve my energy.
This landmark exhibition traces the discourse between the high art of painting and the low media of komiks and graphic design in the works of Botong Francisco and Francisco Coching. It offers an intelligent account of the complex and often ambivalent relationship between art and popular culture, which signaled the emergence of Philippine modernity.
From the hectic postwar years to the advent of Martial Law, Botong Francisco and Francisco Coching articulated the visual sensibility of their era. Botong transformed sly notebook caricatures and design sketches into sprawling murals. Coching delved into abstruse historical sources and the widely circulated Tagalog novels of his time to create stirring narratives of Filipino heroism and nationhood in his komiks. Together they forged an iconography of the folk and the popular, the mass and the national, in kindred registers.
Telling Modern Time: The Life and Art of Botong Francisco Coching, on view at the National Museum of the Filipino People from 11 December 2009 to 11 January 2010 and curated by Patrick D. Flores, will feature approximately 100 works by Botong and Coching, spanning a fascinating range of material, including komiks excerpts, murals, prints, sketches, and memorabilia.
The exhibition is accompanied by a limited-edition numbered box set, available only at the opening night. The box set includes the exhibit catalogue of Telling Modern Time as well as the hardbound editions of the books The Life and Art of Botong Francisco and The Life and Art of Francisco Coching, both edited by Patrick D. Flores.
The opening night will be on December 11, 2009, at 6:30 PM. The venue will be at the South Wing Gallery, 5th Floor, National Museum of the Filipino People. Manila.

WOw, same publisher nung El Indio?? Got my KOMIKON goodies na Gerry!
Gerry, on behalf of Vibal Foundation, maraming salamat ulit sa lahat ng suporta.
BTW, just as an FYI, people can purchase individual copies of The Life and Art of Botong Francisco and The Life and Art of Francisco Coching at the book launch. The limited box set packages the two books together along with the official exhibit catalogue.
Everyone is welcome to attend. We also prepared a short film on Botong and Coching, which will premiere at the book launch and exhibit opening.
Uy! Wow! Sana makapunta ako! Re-post ko to Sir Gerry! :D
Gerry
I saw one on ebay, and on the the description ang sabi ay di pa daw ito out sa bookstore.
Yes, I believe Vibal has a pretty good book on Rizal. The title is “Lolo José: An Intimate and Illustrated Portrait of José Rizal”
Hello Ariel! Nako, no idea…
Tin,
@Jerome Dizon – You can purchase copies of the second edition of “Lolo Jose” in National Bookstore and Powerbooks. Meron din sa Fully Booked (Rockwell and High Street).
@Ariel – The box set will sell at P4000 at the launch.
@Auggie – El Indio will be available in NBS SM Naga by next week (according to our sales department). We’re still exploring other graphic novel projects. Will let you know once may definite na.
Louie, since the book is fresh out of the press, it will initially be available only at the launching. Because of red tape, it will take a month or so before it appears at bookstores. Already EL INDIO is starting to appear in branches of National Bookstore and Powerbooks, a couple of months after the book launched.
Wow! I hope the books become available at bookstores soon. I bought El Indio and it was wonderful. I hope Vibal publishes more comics from this era. :)
Rommel, I went around bookstores last Monday, and I found that EL INDIO was readily available in all National branches I went to, including “Booksellers” in Robinson’s Galleria, which I suppose is owned by National as well. It’s usually located in the Philippine Publications section, and they’re usually arranged by author alphabetically.
Hi Gerry,
thanks for posting the information about the launch. Price of the book is already outthis pm. check this out from vibal site:

Gerry,
Wala pa rito sa NBS sa SM Naga City, bakit kaya? kinukulit ko na nga yung sa acquisitions/ New arrivals, wala pa daw talaga eh…pakifollow-up naman diyan, thanks!
Gerry,
I was looking for a copy of El Indio at NBS, Paseo de Sta Rosa — instead I found a copy of Conching’s Lapu-Lapu (complete series) published by Atlas. This comic book costs P120. (I finally got a copy of El Indio yesterday at Powerbooks, SM Megamall, though).
I’m happy with my copy of Lapu-lapu. However, I wish that it was published in the same way as El Indio.
Thanks for letting me know Allan! This is weird! I was at four branches of NBS today and I haven’t seen a copy.
@allan,
how was the lapu-lapu book?
Gerry and Macoy,
Size: 6″ x 9″; Bond paper (not the glossy type that I prefer); Black and white comics; Cover needs improvement. The illustrations are marvelous! The Arturo character in Lapu-lapu looks like Fernando in El Indio.
The back cover says that copyright belongs to Atlas Publishing Co., Inc., (#6 21st Ave. Cubao, QC, tel # 9129652 – 60). The Editor is Terry C. Bagalso; Assoc Editor: Jocelyn J. Domingo. Fidel Pestan~o, Jayson Vega, and Divine Grace Bongolan were the ones who collected and prepared the comics.
Gerry, among the NBS and Powerbook stores I went to — only NBS Sta Rosa has this Lapu-lapu comic book.
The back cover shows 5 cover pictures of stories that I think Atlas would like to republish (Seems that Barbaro is one of those stories).
