Francisco V. Coching’s works showcased at the Philippine Center in New York

NEW YORK — An exhibit featuring the works of Filipino master comics artist Francisco V. Coching will be showcased at the Philippine Center in New York from Oct. 26 to Nov. 26, 2009
Coching, a popular Filipino novelist and comics illustrator, wrote and illustrated 55 novels, 51 of which were adapted into movies. He was a popular “komiks” personality from 1930 to 1970 and popularized many characters that Filipinos are familiar with such as Hagibis, Barbaro, El Indio, Satur, Lapu Lapu, Pedro Penduko, Movie Fan, Maldita, Talipandas, Condenado, and Dimasalang, among others.
Coching had received from Malacanang the Presidential Merit Award and the Cultural Center of the Philippines Gawad CCP Para Sa Sining for Visual Arts. He continues to connect today, as he has connected and communicated with millions of Filipinos as far back as 1934, with his illustrated comics and novels.

Wow, how exciting!
I hope he gets greater recognition for his art.
Gerry,
It’s about time na bigyan ng INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE si Mr. Coching, para malaman ng buong mundo kung sino talaga ang deserving na NATIONAL ARTIST.
Gerry,
Any idea or info about what’s in the exhibit: originals, komiks pages? Hindi maganda yung venue, nasa lobby ng Philippine Embassy, daanan ng mga tao, but one hardly looks at the exhibit if it’s not put up well. I hope whoever’s curating does a good job of display para kitang-kita lalo’t maliit ang size ng komiks. But whatever, it’s good for Coching to be exposed. Lacking any information about what’s on exhibit, or what it looks like, ideally if I were to do the show, I’d blow up pages and covers to large 30×40 sizes and exhibit those and if there’s originals or actual komiks keep them under glass. Sa aking lang namang ideya. Sayang malayo ako.
Auggie,
Somebody’s been sending me SPAM messages under your name to be a FAN OF or JOIN THIS or THAT group. They look like spam dahil ang dami.
Rod

Pero who knows?
Sa totoo lang Fermin, from what I learn from doing my You Tube videos (which seem to have a lot of Fil-Am viewers) is that a lot of young Filipino-Americans are hungry to learn Tagalog, and some of them are kind of frustrated that it was never spoken in their home.
I don’t know exactly what goes in the exhibit, but I can guess there will be a few originals, and a lot more blown up covers and other artwork. I think they will move the exhibit to Hawaii after this.
Rod,
Tama ang observations mo pagdating sa EXHIBITS. Dapat talaga, they should be stopped on their tracks at ma-grab ang attention.
Gerry,
Even if both parents were immigrants from RP, their children will eventually have English as their 1st language — because of the culture that at really young age children tend to spend less and less time with their parents. Until later, much later, these Fil-Ams (that really have 100% Pinoy blood) may, hopefully, (re)discover their Philippine roots, and may even visit RP to satisfy their curiousity and be amazed with the culture that they’ve missed.
In one episode of “NO RESERVATION” by Anthony Bourdain there’s this one US-born guy with pure Filipino blood who toured the Philippines by accident and for unexplainable reason found so much attachment that he started promoting the Philippines as a tourist destination, and thus to Anthony Bourdain of that travel show. But he does not speak any Philippine language. Imagine a Pinoy-looking guy who will ask anyone in a Philippine street in English?
Auggie,
Tama ka, I’ve been there and nobody even looks at the exhibit.
Hahahahaha. I was trying to find one for Eva Cassidy (favorite ko) to become a fan of, and I couldn’t find one.
Fermin,
Sana nga makarating dito sa L.A. Magandang ideya ang traveling show.
Rod,
Eva Cassidy? andoon yun, hanapin mo lang. Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennette, Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Joe Kubert, Steve Ditko, Al Williamson, James Dean, Alain Delon, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Federico Fellini, Sergio Leone etc. andun yun….
Auggie,
Don’t like Facebook for some reason.

Fermin,
nasa magulang talaga yan eh..
