The 5th Annual KOMIKON, the Filipino Komiks Convention is this Sunday, October 18, 2009, and it’s the culminating activity of the four-day Philippine International Cartoons, Comics, and Animation (PICCA) Festival, which begins on October 15 at the SM Megamall, and surrounding areas.

Komikero Publishing will have TWO new releases at the Komikon:

ELMER COLLECTED EDITION
by Gerry Alanguilan
144 pages, Colored Cover, Black & White Interiors, 6.5″x9″, Perfect Binding

I added exactly just ONE new story page just for the sake of continuity. I tried not to add any new material to it so those who have already bought the individual issues don’t feel they’re being compelled to buy it. There is an afterword, and a few pinups that have already appeared in the series.

The Elmer Collected Edition *will* be available at National Book Store, Powerbooks and Fully Booked (I don’t know exactly when), and will retail for P250. We will be having a special Komikon only sale of P220 per copy at the event.

WHERE BOLD STARS GO TO DIE
Written by Gerry Alanguilan, Illustrated by Arlanzandro C. Esmeña
56 pages. Black and Gold Cover, Black & White Interiors, 6.5″x9″, Perfect Binding

This book is my attempt to create bomba komiks that’s not cheap and lewd, and in fact approaches this genre with a measure of sensitivity and emotional maturity. This is Arlan’s first go at drawing comic books and I’m amazed how much potential he has. One of the gems of this issue is the pinup section which features some of the best illustrators in the industry. The final line-up includes: Francisco V. Coching, Tony De Zuniga, Brice Beckham, Carlo Vergara, Leinil Francis Yu, Carlo Pagulayan, Gilbert Monsanto, Edgar Tadeo, Arnold Arre, Philip Tan and Arlan himself.

Because we intentionally elevated the production values on this title, add to that the sensitive nature of the subject matter, we are offering this title at P150, and will NOT be sold to minors.

KOMIKON Releases that I’m involved in:

UNDERPASS

Press Release:

Set to launch this coming KOMIKON 2009 (October 18, Megatrade Hall 1, SM Megamall), Underpass is a graphic anthology featuring dark fantasy stories from some of today’s greatest Pinoy comics creators.

Sim by Gerry Alanguilan
Judas Kiss by David Hontiveros, Budjette Tan and Oliver Pulumbarit
Katumbas by David Hontiveros and Ian Sta. Maria
The Clinic by Budjette Tan and Ka-jo Baldisimo.

The full-color anthology, which is Summit Media’s first foray into Philippine-produced comics, will retail for P250. After the Komikon, Underpass will be available in major magazine shops.

SIM Cover Page

Strangely enough, of all the people working in this anthology, I’m the only one who doesn’t have a cellphone, and yet my story *is* about cellphones. I don’t want to give the story away, but it was sparked by my picking up a SIM card in a tricycle I was riding a few months ago. I wondered what was in it, and as soon as I plugged it into a cellphone well… I will not say if the story I told in SIM is true or not. Let’s just say I’m still alive today to tell the tale.

Although soft launched at the recent Book Fair, Francisco V. Coching’s EL INDIO will have a proper launching at the Komikon!

It is the culmination of five years of restoration work between myself and Zara Macandili, where we digitally cleaned each panel of Coching’s classic komiks series.

Colored Cover, Black and White interiors, P600

THE FIRST ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF PHILIPPINE KOMIKS and CARTOONS
by John A. Lent
Published by Yonzon Associates

I’m very excited about this one, and I have nothing but deep admiration and respect for Mr. Hugo Yonzon and wife Guia for their tireless, and often times unheralded support for Philippine Comics. My contribution to this book is marginal at best, providing material here and there, but this book will absolutely not be possible without the Yonzons. Hats off to you guys!

The coffee table book is hardbound and full color. P1,500

KOMIKERO COMICS #3
Created and Published by the Komikero Artists Group

My unpublished and unfinished story from 1997 (which I finished 10 years later), Timawa: Jumper will finally see print in the anthology from my own little Komikero group.

5.5″x8.5″ Photocopied comic book. P50

I’m breathless just talking about it!

There will also be auctions at the KOMIKON, to benefit flood victims. Two items already confirmed to be auctioned off include:

ELMER HARDCOVER SLIPCASE
Only 8 of these were made (7 of which were sold publicly). This is my personal copy. It will come in signed with an original sketch.

A SIGNED LEINIL YU SKETCHBOOK 2009
This is what a copy looks like.

Please bid, and bid high! It’s for the best cause. No pledges. No post dated checks. Sorry, but the need is IMMEDIATE. Cash preferred!

Oh yeah! Is it insane already, or what? And I’m only talking about releases that involve myself and/or Komikero Publishing. A lot of other people will also be launching their own stuff like TRESE BOOK 3 by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo, a full color Kikomachine book by Manix Abrera, and a lot more!

WHEW!

Before Komikon, I’ll be giving a talk, along with Gilbert Monsanto and Mrs. Guia Yonzon on comic book publishing at Powerbooks Megamall, 1pm on October 15.

I wish I could be present for more PICCA activities, but work doesn’t stop and I have an issue of Ultimate Avengers to finish inking before Komikon! So in case I don’t update this before Sunday, I guess I’ll just see you guys there!

    Goodbye money! XD

  9. Gerry Alanguilan on October 12th, 2009 2:11 pm

Rox, tama ka dyan. Pati kami goodbye na rin. It’s a huge personal investment to self publish two books at the same time. Ganun din ang ginawa ni Gilbert Monsanto for his releases this Komikon. Baon ako sa utang, pero Oks lang yun! We love comics and we love creating and sharing them. :)

  11. chummy on October 12th, 2009 7:12 pm

Wowowowowow….wish i can be there at the Komikon. :)Will “Where Boldstars Go to Die” be available via NBS and Fullybooked or Powerbooks soon?for us Cebuano fans.

  12. Gerry Alanguilan on October 12th, 2009 7:32 pm

Chummy, most likely Bold Stars won’t be available at NBS. I would prefer to sell it myself and selected comic book shops so there’s no chance it can be bought by minors. If you and people you know in your area are interested, you can just get it from me directly. If you’re a group, you can at least save on the shipping.

  18. J.R. Bumanglag on October 14th, 2009 2:10 am

With all the sacrifices you guys have made for the love of komiks, I believe in the long run (this Komikon 2009 and more years to come), will pay off immensely. People and companies are now starting to notice the komiks culture. I never would have imagined Summit Media and Vibal going to the komiks publishing route.

    Cheers and more power!

  19. Dennis Domingo on October 14th, 2009 6:06 am

Wow! It looks like this year’s Komikon will be something. Since I’ve just recently decided to start up my collection, I think I’ll start with a few of these.

Thanks for the announcement and I hope all you guys in the local industry keep on putting out great stories.

  20. auggie on October 14th, 2009 12:43 pm

    Gerry,

I really hope these events would provide an impetus to all progressive publishing houses that there’s indeed a market for quality komiks.

  21. Borgy on October 15th, 2009 2:24 am

    Let’s see that’s P220+P250+P150+P600+P50+P1500 = P2770…

… and Bayan Knights #3… and Trese Book 3… and the other indies… and the bargain bin comics (some hard to find vintage ones)sold only at Komikon… and the other stuff…

……… and my budget is P1500…

    ………….

    ……………

    WHY GOD, WHY??!!!

i hope john lent’s “first 100 years…” gets solicited to all the libraries, that stuff ought to be available to everyone.

though a less boob-tastic cover might make it easier to actually get into the libraries… :/

Hey it’s Sansan, formerly of St23. I miss you at Plurk!

Off-topic: I just wanted to share. Since I’m not in your twitter. Look! Look! David Tennant and Simon Pegg movie!!! http://tennantnews.blogspot.com/2009/10/burke-and-hare.html

On-topic: Might see you on Sunday. I will wave at you ok?

Elmer is a MUST buy for me!

  28. Gerry Alanguilan on October 15th, 2009 10:27 pm

Yeah, that’s awesome, Sansan! When I heard about that Tennant-Pegg pairing, plus John Landis, I thought wow, I can’t wait! Yeah, I haven’t been Plurking anymore. I’ve had to cut down on some of the networking because of my reduced free time due to work.

  29. Gerry Alanguilan on October 15th, 2009 10:29 pm

Hey macoy… there’s actually a second cover underneath the dust cover. It’s a small illustration of Rizal reading a comic book. I think they can just remove the dust cover of they feel it’s inappropriate. Azrael has a preview of the published book:

Don’t worry, Ram, we’ll be bringing a lot of copies with us. I really doubt we’ll run out. ;)

  33. ron tan on October 16th, 2009 5:57 pm

eeps! i won’t be able to make it to komikon! hope there will be copies of “where bold stars” available in comic odyssey afterwards! really excited also for “underpass” under summit! a publishing giant like them could herald the start of a marvel/dc-like company here! congrats on the new projects sir gerry!:D

  34. adam! on October 16th, 2009 8:01 pm

a publishing giant like them could herald the start of a marvel/dc-like company here!

i’m hoping it’ll be under someone who actually KNOWS and RESPECTS and LOVES komix, and not just see it as a cash cow (ie, not Summit, or Anvil, or any other publisher for that matter – why does it even have to be a giant company? we really lack the economic infrastructure to support such a giant [ie, caparas' failed stunt a few years ago]) me, i’d rather we have a healthy zinedom DIYing their efforts a la Komikero, and those zinesters and manga peeps we see annually … we already HAVE that. yun muna ang suportahan.

  35. Markus on October 17th, 2009 6:31 pm

I find no problem with big publishers releasing comics. Look at Trese, for instance. Its surely a way to reach out to more readers on a nationwide level. Not all comic fans can go to conventions anyway.

  36. adam! on October 18th, 2009 9:52 am

    Look at Trese, for instance.

but look where it first got noticed. we shouldn’t hang our hopes too much on a system that relies primarily on SELLING, as once it doesn’t SELL (or even doesn’t SEEM WILL SELL), none of it will be in the market. look at sterling. look at anino.

but then look at ELMER, and IRIS, and SACRED MOUNTAIN, and CAST. even CULTURE CRASH was an independent effort.

and a big publisher doesn’t always equal a nationwide distro, as evidenced by the lack of pinoy poetry books in most bookstore shelves. university publishers – and anvil – release quite a few of it (certainly more than our komix) but you never really see them on the shelves.
