    I looked at his blog. Looks like he’s also a painter and a sculptor too, in the mold of National Artist Arturo Luz. And interesting colors on his houses and designs. Baka pwedeng bumili ng lupa diyan and have him build the house. It really won’t be too bad to retire in San Pablo, I’ve seen how beautiful it is in your pictures.

    I hope lalagyan ninyo ng paliwanag kung ano ang tinatawag na BOLD STAR. Kasi sa RP lang ito kilala. Itong euphemism na ito ay hindi maiintindihan sa labas. Kung lalabas ito sa bansa, biglang: Huh? What the heck is a bold star?

    Since the RP bold stars are not really porn stars, but mainstream softcore stars, there should be some dialogues or anything to explain to outsiders. O maski siguro sa back cover ng libro, maipaliwanag ito para walang malito.

    This expression is similar to another ONLI IN DA PILIPINS word, like: DIREK. I mean, outside the country, no one would understand what a direk is, which is simply: Film Director. It shows how we respect our film directors in the country. We even try to give them some sort of title, like ATTY. AGATON. Even if one specializes only in MASSACRE FILMS, we still call him direk and some president would even give him an NA award. I’d say that’s fantastic.

    Teka, bakit ba lagi akong naliligaw sa sinasabi ko. I think I am meandering. Sign of old age na yata ito, ah. Now I will have my own title: LOLO JOSE (unless of course CORITHA sues me for using her song title).

    He-he. I couldn’t agree more. Except that they don’t look as lovely as our Bomba Stars. He-he.

    But seriously, Bomba Stars were used in the late 60s. Bomba, a favorite word of Manila Mayor Antonio Villegas which he used during his campaign (because of his bombastic way of delivering his speeches and pitch to the masses and eventually he was called BOMBA, which they also used to call ROGER ARRIENDA for his equally bombastic speeches), was also borrowed by the local film industry and that’s how the public used that word, describing the original “bomba” stars such as Stella Suarez, Divina Valencia, Lucita Soriano, et al. But bomba is actually (PUMP) in Spanish, which is very similar to the (PUMPING) action of the SINGIT filmclips. Thus, Bomba is used in the movies in this context. Singit because these explicit scenes were added in the theaters, without the approval of the Board of Censors. These scenes were inserted in the mainstream film whose subject is also about sex, but not as explicit as the singit scenes.

    The word “BOLD STAR” on the other hand, was born in the 1970s, coined by none other than JOEY GOSIENGFIAO, who refused to call these movies BOMBA movies. Bold, because these lovely young women are a bunch of daring actresses who would not think twice to undress in front of the screen. Though the film BOMBA STAR which starred Alma Moreno and directed by Joey himself, was more or less a sample of a post-modernist type of a film where the setting and history are deliberately made not to reflect their accurate existence (the film appears to have happened in the 1950s because the moral values of a small town reflected them, yet the time was obviously 1970s). It’s like the Hollywood film BODY HEAT. It’s the best post modernist example we can find. The film was actually done as if it looks like a typical FILM NOIR of the 1930s, but history is not important and just parodied, hence the characters in modern Florida were complaining about the heat (as if the story happened in 1930s), while in reality, we sure are aware of the existence of air conditioning in the 1980s).

    I forgot to mention that the word Bomba has evolved since YEBA (Mayor Villegas) and ARRIENDA started it. Nowadays Bomba it means NUDE. The original meaning has been obfuscated through the years.

    This is one thing that’s amazing about the Philippines. The languages are not stagnant. They keep evolving. In fact, after 25 years or so of not living there, I find a lot of words being used by people are now strange-sounding to me. Neologism seems to occur every year.

    ISPUTING was very popular in the 1950s. If you watch an old tagalog movie or even komiks, ISPUTING was always used.

    Like the word ISTAMBAY, it is a tagalized version of an english word. In the 50s, i.p.a. (international phonetic alphabet) was not widely taught, and therefore, many pinoys’ pronounciation was through hearing only (and not through the proper placement of tongue in relation to the palette and lips, thus, resulting in an unusual sounding accent), and most of the time English word is always “TAGALIZED”.

    ISPUTING is simply SPORTING (wear or display).
    As in:

    “Wow, naka-isputing ka ngayon, ha?”

    In English, when people say: Wow, you’re sporting that fantastic clothes”, the pinoys as usual, took the short-cut route by simply saying: “isputing.”

    ISTAMBAY came from STAND-BY.

    “Pa-ista-istambay ka diyan sa kanto.”

    Jeproks was invented by JUAN DE LA CRUZ BAND, more specifically, by the ingenious MIKE HANOPOL. When their 45 single of ANAK SA LAYAW came out, that word became very popular.

    “Anak sa layaw… anak sa layaw…JEPROKS!”

    Gosh, ask Auggie. He has more to tell you because he is older. He-he.

    Makiki-sabat lang. As per ‘jeproks’, My band mate, whose a legitimate jeproks back in the day, explained that the word originated from Imelda’s housing ‘projects’ in QC. Projects 1, 2, 3, etc… Thereafter I assume, every word that was ‘tad-bali’ has been referred to as ‘jeproks’.

    I like where this is going, hahaha. What happened to Arlan (he’s got a new entry anyway)? JM, I’m surprised you got the word Sputing, that is a word used before you were born wasn’t it? I know you’re younger than me. That word indeed was used in the 50′s, and specially if you’r wearing nice clothes such as sharkskin suit or pants, you’re naka-Sputing. As for Jeproks, this was in vogue around the 70′s, so I’m not sure the PROJECTS origin will hold water, as the projects started earlier than the 70′s, probably late 50′s too (and I’m not sure this was Imelda’s projects, the projects was around before her), but that explanation certainly sounds good. I’m not sure if Jeproks is still being used, but now the in-word is ASTIG, I believe. Another word that came around was HANEP, used to be HAYOP, there was even an expression HAYOP SA MADAMO, which basically meant the same as HANEP now. Just my two cents, correct me if I’m wrong.

    Sorry, it jumped.

    I was saying that Imelda didn’t have such housing project called PROJECT. It was President ELPIDIO QUIRINO who made the so-called PROJECT housing in QC. Project 1, 2, 3 up to 8 – were built by his government, and that was in the late 40s).

    There was no mention of the word Jeproks as far as I can remember, until Hanopol released his song LAKI SA LAYAW.

    Imelda’s housing was never called project. We called it PAG-IBIG, and honestly, the best among the other projects than by other presidents. Diosdado Macapagal had his own, but never called project either. It was called TENEMENT HOUSING. If your friend invented the invertion of the the word project, it must be the Quirino one, but it was an ancient thing already, not unless this rocker is at least 80 years old now.

    In my generation, I have never heard this word JEPROKS until Hanopol released the song LAKI SA LAYAW. In fact, if you see old tagalog movies or read old comics, this word was never used anywhere until the 1970′s, after the release of Hanopol’s recording.

    Auggie, the pop culture guru, must know if Jeproks was used before Hanopol’s time, because I don’t remember this word in my childhood, only in my teenage years. LOL.

    Yes, it can be vexatious sometimes, but it’s just the reality of man’s existence. Languages keep evolving.

    Don’t worry, we’re aware of Arlan’s drawings and they’re BIGATIN (another 1950′s expression I used to hear Leopoldo Salcedo would say in his movies. He-he). Indeed it was way before my time, but I love things like this. I listened, I asked the oldies when I was a kid and that’s how I retained all these info in my brain.

    But as what I’ve said, if there’s one guru of RP pop culture, that would be none other than Auggie Surtida. So, guys, you should all be asking Auggie for any slang, trend (YEH-YEH VONNEL anyone? Ha-ha!) for instance, and I’m pretty sure he’ll be able to tell you what it was like in the old days.

    Hello Mr. JM Lee,

    Thanks for the correction on the Imelda info i gave. I wouldn’t know that for myself and just accepted what I heard. I haven’t seen the light of day until 1981. XD

    Anyway, like a lot of words, Jeproks can be used in wide variety of ways. From what was told to me, the word wasn’t very popular back then. It was probably known only to the people that lived in those housing projects.

    In my perception from how it was told to me, the word somehow has a negative meaning to it, much like today’s ‘jologs’ or ‘iskwater’ which (originally) refer to people whose ‘baduy’.

    From then on, I can only assume what happened. Maybe a lot of the early pinoy rockers came from the tenements (I think Hanopol was), enough that the word jeproks became associated with rockers, and then eventually, the genre. Then rock became so popular that the laki-sa-layaw kids thought it was cool and branded themselves the word.

    Then Mike Hanopol brought it mainstream through his song, which made the word immensely popular with the masses. But his contemporaries say he got the word from the projects wordplay.

    But then again, for all we know, maybe he really intended the song to be oxymoronic after all. Laki sa layaw -jeproks! XD

    It may have been true. Maybe the word was only used by a small group originally, i.e., referring to the Elpidio Quirino projects. Though the projects weren’t that bad, really. Decent people with decent jobs lived in those areas. Quirino, in fact, added more to these projects in Kamuning, QC. If you’re familiar with K-1st, K2nd, K3rd up to K5th – all of these areas were part and parcel of his housing projects. What’s really good about this was these places never became the likes of Sapang Palay and or Isla Puting Bato. Even nowadays, these projects are still petty decent (or are they?) You see, I haven’t been near there, so you guys would be able to tell us what it’s like now.

    It might have been in existence, this word Jeproks, but must became very popular (as in known throughout the Philippines) after Hanopol released his record. Therefore, it is possible that he only used it in his song and became a smash hit – Jeproks (in Hanopol’s lingo meaning: a BUM).

    Auggie should interview Hanopol for this. He-he.

    And by the way, it is amazing that only now – the whole world is discovering Juan de la Cruz Band’s fantastic music. Allover Europe and here in North America, their records are quite the major staple of Rave parties (wild youth parties in warehouses) of the 90s (which are now called DANCE PARTIES. He-he. Trying to disguise its wild side ). I’ve had the chance to attend a few of these revelries in the 90s, and really boggled my mind why suddenly, the music of my youth from the country I used to live in – was making all the party goers go crazy. Laki sa Layaw, Balong Malalim, Batugan, even Mr. Kenkoy made the wild party goers dance in frenzy.

    The irony was – the party goers are generally in their mid teens to their early 30s, and they are dancing to a rock music recorded at leat 27 or so years ago. It’s just too bad that the ingenuity of the band was discovered by the world much, much too late (kung kailan wala na sa music scene ang mga ito).

    Right now, a mint condition of any Hanopol or Juan de la Cruz band LP is worth $4,000 and collectors are having a hard time finding them.

    With all this scintillating talk of etymologies of slang could anyone of our distinguished body inform (Naks!)me of the origins of the following that had an impact on the generations that spawned them(for reference… and because it’d be fun ^_^):

    - Padudels
    - Gamol
    - Jologs
    - Fashionista (It seems to be the rage nowadays but I seem to recall this was of relative use by Pinoys in the mid-90′s)
    - Grabeh! (yes, with the ‘h’ sound)
    - Kamote (used in so many ways)
    - Syota (still used but I’m clueless as to how this means ‘Girlfriend’)
    - Echos (pronounced E-tchos)
    - Lakas ng dating!
    - Bagets (I heard it was coined from the ‘baguettes’ used on fashion items but I’m not sure how it relates to teenagers)

    I’m sure there are others (before my time). Anyway, thanks in advance!

    a designer, promoter, or follower of the latest fashions (this word is not available ONLI IN DA PILIPINS). It is now in the mainstream dictionary. It’s very common here in north America.

    • Grabeh! – That H sound being in vogue in 1970s and did it ever annoy me.

    There was: bHoy, dHanny, mHario, even bHorgy! and whatever sound with H.
    The darkest decade of the H sound. I don’t know the ASTHMATIC individual who started to speak with this WHEEZING souHnd, bHut iHt jHust aHnnoyed mHe tHo deatHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

    • Kamote – having a hard time during an exam was the main usage of this one.

    • or, KINAKAMOTE ka ng babaing iyan (being pushed around by his GF or wife or concubine (whichever you have).

    • Syota – a boy or a girl can both called their love interest SYOTA.

    • ETCHOS (this is the original spelling). This one has several meanings. The credit goes to Movie reporter (and now councillor) JUSTO C. JUSTO. He had a newspaper column on local showbiz in the 1970s (The Sun tabloid) and he was the one who introduced this word to Filipinos. Originally, it simply meant: not serious; not true; a joke; and so on. Hence, when a gay says to another gay: ETCHOSERA KA!~ it meant the gay being accused of the this word is a liar or someone who is in cloud nine. As long as the word is used to mean not serious or true.

    The other words that JJ invented were:

    • Katikatirik – from the word KATI, as in makati (itchy), a loose woman.

    • Kulukadidang – your paramour, especially when one is already married, and still having a KULUKADIDANG.

    • Pakarat – a man, or a woman who sells his body for sex.

    Justo C. Justo had invented a lot of gayspeak during this decade, and one day, we saw each other in a restaurant and he invited me to sit at his table. During our conversation, he made my head spin, to tell you the truth. He-he.

    • Lakas ng dating!-this can mean differently depending on what the focus is. An attractive woman, for instance – is malakas ang dating.

    • Bagets – no, it was not from the French Bread called ‘baguettes’.

    This word began in 1970s as well, the original word started in Regal Films, though not BAGET originally, but BABIES. In those days, Regal had a stable of young actors that were called the REGAL BABIES.

    Then, many talent scouts who were gays and who all wanted to discover their own BABIES (a young individual to be built up as actors).

    Unfortunately, like vultures, some of these gay talent scouts TAKE ADVANTAGE of these young people and they compel them to go to bed with them first – before they will be presented to any producer. Nasty part of our local showbiz, but sadly true.

    This word surfaced by being whispered during conversations amongst showbiz people, insiders who knew who is who in the industry. Thus, combining BABY and GET (have sex with them), became: BA (for baby) GET (like previously explained).

    In plural form: BAGETS.

    You see, it has nothing to do with that French Bread Baguette. He-he.

    Later, the meaning became mainstream: a young, up and coming star.

    Interesting words and their putative meanings and origins.

    JM, indeed many of these words are from gay lingo.
    The adding of H is of course gay.
    However, I think BAGETS came from BAGITO or the diminutive of BAGO, meaning new in the field or young, thus BAGETS. The young actors in the movie who were called BAGETS, which describes them exactly, just made the word popular.
    ETCHOS (or however you spell it) is another gay word. From the Spanish word HECHO, meaning DONE or MADE as in HECHO EN Mexico – Made in Mexico. Originally just meant a gay person from a non-gay perspective. So if you’re not gay, you refer to a gay person as ETCHOS YANG si JUSTO. I guess the gays have another meaning for it.
    PAKARAT means exactly as you say, KARAT is an Ilonggo word meaning a sexually loose female. Also from Ilonggo is BUWANG – Crazy.

    Ilyn, rest assured the word SHOTA did not come from Short Time. I grew up with the word in my own amorous conquests in my bachelor days and it never meant that. However, it was original BATA, it just evolved to a more softer-sounding SHOTA. BATA and SHOTA are used interchangeably.

    Kung “syota” (short time) ang tawag sa girlfriend, ang tawag ba sa asawa ay “longta” (long time)? Anyway, gaano katagal na ba ang konsepto ng “short time” sa mga motel? Kasi sa Pinas lang yata may ganito – sa US ang room sa motel ay good for entire night at hindi 2 hours lang.

    Well, in my time (the 60s,70s) you pay for the entire night. The motels were located mostly along Roxas Blvd in Pasay, and some proliferated also in Pasig, between the Municipio and the Pasig River.

    “Does anybody have the meaning of JOLOGS yet?”

    Kung hindi late 90s ay early 2000 nagsimulang mauso itong salitang ito at nagkaroon pa yata ng ng tv program na ito ang title. Parang umutukoy ito sa “masa” o “bakya” o “poor” in general.

    Salitang “showbiz” ito kaya malamang na malaki ang kinalaman ng mga gay dito.

    Hindi ko alam ang pinagmulan ng salita pero ganito ang mga hula ko:

    1. “hulugan” (as in instalment na gamit o suot, na dahil sa hilig ng mga Pinoy gay na gawing “J” ang simula ng bawat salita ay naging “jologan” at naging “jologs” na nga

    2. “alaga” na tumutukoy sa menor de edad na mahirap na tinutustusan, ang salitang ito ay naging “jolaga” na nga ang tawag at later on naging “jolog” (singular form) at “jologs” pag collectively.

    Just a theory.

    A film by Star Cinema was made based upon that HOKUS-POKUS scriptwriting contest they initiated in the 90s. Originally, the contest was supposed to happen every year, tapos, once lang naganap, at ang second year, wala raw qualified na manalo.

    HHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

    Dahil contest, I was expecting the creme de la creme ang quality na makikita natin. Unfortunately, yung JOLOGS ay very episodic, lahat yata ng sangkaterbang characters ay gustong i-develop!     Yung JEPROKS, yata, refers to the Projects, yung gov’t housing noong 50s,e.g. Proj.1 (Roxas District) Proj.2 ,3 and so forth.Binaliktad lang. Yung PAKARAT, eh , an easy girl na madaling MATONTING ( get laid). Yung JOLOGS, eh yung naive na trying hard to fit in, para masabing IN din siya,at hindi Baduy. Si Jolina yata yung prototypical JOLOGS noon, if I’m not mistaken.
    Yung ARISTOBACK, eh turo-turong Karendirya, sa likod ng ARISTOCRAT, at favorite kainan ng mga Taxi drivers, at nagtitipid na mga Jologs noong late 50s early 60s. GARNATZA, is for frivoulous and trivial things .Masakit Ulo mo? bakit hindi ka bumili ng gamot? Mi pang-GARNATZA ka , pero sa gamot wala!
