When Luis Singson got in touch with me with the intention of holding a Jess A. Noriega art exhibit, I rummaged through my collection and discovered that I did not have as many Jess Noriega artwork as I had thought. This one that I did find is from the December 18, 1972 issue of Liwayway Magazine. The story, “Ang Kuripot na Ninong” (The Stingy Godfather) is written by Amado C. Yasoña.

This issue of Liwayway is amazing at a whopping 170 pages! About 1/3 of it is devoted to comics and illustrations. Good old days eh? It’s a virtual gallery of classic comics which includes creators like Francisco V. Coching, Federico Javinal, Fred Carrillo, Jun Lofamia, ER Cruz, Danny Bulanadi, Pablo Gomez, Nestor Malgapo, Rodie Marte Metin, Clodualdo Del Mundo, Mars Ravelo, Del Barras, Bienvenido A. Ramos, Rolly C. Buenafe, Nitoy Agustin and Domy Gutierrez.

How much for the issue? 85 centavos. In 1972! NOT cheap at all!

It’s also got a lot of funky funny ads that I just have to share one of these days. Those whacky 70s!

Waw! 170 pages???!!! For 85 cents?

As for your other question… di ko sure kung saan makakabili ng ticket for PICCA. You can ask yung head organizer si Mr. Hugo Yonzon sa kanyang multiply: http://hugzone.multiply.com

    Gerry,
Thanks for posting. Iba ito sa natatandaan kong style ni Mang Jess. May pagka-Fred Carillo/Teny Henson ito. 176 pages at ang daming komiks. I never did collect Liwayway Magazine, too much na yung apat na komiks sa ACE. Can you post the other illustrators in that issue, particularly Coching and Javinal. BTW, Unang Labas has been posting many early Liwayway komiks that I’ve never seen before.

    Rod,

itong gawa ng kumpare kung si Jess ay hindi hawig sa gawa nina Fred Carillo at Teny Henzon, ang layo.

Typical of RP’s old komiks. Before a wayward character realizes his mistakes, he must first experience something positive or negative, rather than internalizing his own purpose here on earth amongst his fellow men. In the case of KURIPOT NA NINONG, it was a positive experience for the benefit of the wayward character, hence the sudden change in his disposition.

It’s rather simplistic, but I guess the RP komiks medium of olden days never really strived to explore more character internalization, probably because the writers were afraid to bore the readers whose main goal was to be entertained.

    Spoon-feeding to the highest degree.

Naku, huwag sana akong pukulin ng santol, kamatis na lang.

    :)

    Ginoong Dery,
Hmmm, ngayong nasipat ko nang mas mabuti, you’re right, mas hawig yata to early Floro Dery.
