Jess A. Noriega Tribute Exhibit

Si Mr. Jess Noriega, o “Apo Jess” sa pagkakakilala ng iba, ay isang manunulat at dibuhista ng komiks magsimula noong 1957. Nakilala siya sa kanyang mga ginawang art covers, at sa pagpasok ng 1970 siya ay nakumbida ng manager ng Graphic Arts Services Inc. (GASI) na si Tony Velasquez na magdibuho para sa kanila (Si Tony Velasquez ang siyang gumawa ng unang Filipino comics strip na “Kenkoy”). Kabilang ang Teens Weekly sa mga komiks na nagawan ni Apo Jess ng art cover. Sa komiks din na iyon ay nagdibuho siya ng mga maiikling kuwento tulad ng “Lola Goyang.” Lumabas rin sa Holiday Komiks ang “Gina at Aladino” na sulat at dibuho ni Apo Jess. Sa katapusan ng 1970 ay nakapagdibuho si Apo Jess sa kilalang Liwayway Publications. Siya ang sumulat at nagdibuho ng mga kuwentong “Anarda” at “Bokbok” na isinalin sa wikang Ilokano para sa Bannawag magasin. Nagretiro siya noong 1982, at sa kasalukuyan ay may arts and sign na negosyo.

Bukod sa mga komiks at painting ni Apo Jess, kasama rin sa exhibition ang mga fan art ng ilang mga dibuhista ng mas nakababatang henerasyon. Inaanyayahan namin kayo na dumalo sa opening ng exhibit sa Setyembre 19, 6pm. sa Sigwada Gallery, 1921 Oroquieta St., Sta Cruz, Manila.

    Gerry,
    I am wondering if this is the same Jess Noriega who lived in Balik-Balik some 40-50 years ago when I was learning how to draw komiks. I used to go to his house located in front of the Catholic church in Balik-Balik to watch him draw and learn the ropes. His style was Redondo as I recall.

    Wala nang iba.

    I have teamed up with Jess for several komiks stories in 1970s in Atlas. Mga kasing edad nito siguro si Mang Nestor Malgapo. Alam ko naging kasamahan din ito ni Supremong Kapre sa BAL Publications noon. Hindi ko alam na nag-LIWAYWAY pala ito later on. Noon kasing 70s ay puro short stories lang ang hinahawakan niya.

    seriously, mas magaling talaga mga filipino kesa mga kano

    why?

    nung mga 1950s + 1960s, sina jack kirby, ross andru, etc. pangit ang anatomy, symmetry
    maganda lang komiks nila because of colors and taglines which made their books catchy and appealing

    pero tayo, partida pa!
    pangit and kulay pero mas magagaling tayo pagdating sa anatomy ng drawings, line works per se

    Rod,

    ito nga ang Jess Noriega na sinasabi mo. Kainuman kong madalas ito at naging kumpare ko rin ito. Sa dalas kong kainuman ito, ang stelo ng drawing niya ay ginaya iyong HANAP-BUHAY na stelo ko.

    Medyo may edad na ito nuong magkabarkada kami. Buhay pa pala ang kumpare kung ito, siguro mga 75 anyos, humigit kumulang, ang edad nito.

    Gerry, paki-kumusta na lang sa kumpare kung ito, pakisabi sa kanya na SAPUKIN ko siya kung magkita kami, hhhhhhh ……, meron atraso kasi ito sa akin.

    75 na pala ito? Akala ko bata pa ito noong nasa Atlas. Akala ko nga ka-edad lang ni Nestor Malgapo. Mas gurang pala ito. HHHHHHHH. Hindi pala ito nalalayo sa edad ni Nestor Redondo. Mukhang ito siya sa illsutrator na nakatuntong ng 70s at buhay pa. Ang dami kasi, pagtuntong ng 60s, lumilipat na sa kabilang bakod. Nakakatuwa na meron naman palang inaabot ng ganitong edad sa illustrators. Parang si LOLO JESSIE F. SANTOS. HHHHHHH.

    Salamat Mang Kapre at JM sa mga sagot. Wow buhay pa pala itong si Mang Jess. Oo, mas may edad nga siya, dahil out of High School pa lang ako nung mameet ko siya. Hindi magkalayo ang bahay namin sa Balik-Balik noon. May pamilya na siya, at ang tanda ko’y may mga tattoo na siya sa braso yata, noong hindi pa uso ang tattoo. Mabait na tao.
    Gerry, kilala mo ba siya o ang gallery owner? May gallery pala doon sa Oroquieta. Parang naligaw na gallery, sa may Avenida Rizal ito, malapit sa San Lazaro hospital at race track. Usually mga gallery nasa Makati o sa Megamall.

    JM & Rod,

    medyo mali yata ang tantiya ko sa edad ng kumpare kung ito, maaring malapit na ito sa 70 anyos. Natatandaan ko pa na matanda ito ng 10 taon sa akin dahil iyong panganay nito ay mga 10 anyos ng maging ninong ako ng bunso niya. Kaidad yata itong si Jess ni Nestor Malgapo at Tony Ancheta, pero mas bata naman itong si Nar de Mesa kay Jess dahil ang tawag sa kanya ni Nar ay Mang Jess.

    Si Jessie Santos naman ay lolo na talaga ito, baka mga 75 anyos na ito. Minsan nakatagpo ko itong si Jessie dito sa US ay medyo mahina na ito, biyudo na rin pero meron mas bata pa sa kanya na magandang puti na kasama niya ng magkita kami, hhhhhhh.

    No comments from you? This is a very mysterious post actually. First you could not possibly know Jess Noriega, he’s a 60s komiks guy, and as attested here, he must be at least 70 years old, second, no write-up on the posting from you, or at least the accompanying write-up does not seem to be yours, and third he’s not been featured here before or at least not to my knowledge. Very mysterious indeed.

    Hello Rod!

    Not really mysterious… it’s kind of a press release from a Luis Singson, who met Jess Noriega and felt his work needed to be exhibited. I said I’d help him promote the exhibit here. I just might go there on opening night. I’m familiar with the area where this gallery is located.

    I have very few Jess Noriaga material in my collection, but I found a nice 2-pager from a Liwayway Christmas issue which I’ll be posting soon.

    Hahahaha, that explains it. Can’t wait to see that 2-pager, I can barely remember his style, but when I met him it was Redondo-influenced, similar to Hermoso Pancho. Go to the opening?… wow, that’s in Santa Cruz, and that’s probably a whole days drive if my idea of the traffic situation there is correct.

    Magandang araw po, ako po si Luis Singson, ‘yong nagorganize ng exhibit ni Mang Jess Noriega.Siya nga po iyong illustrator na nakatira dati sa Balik-Balik. Sa may Cainta Rizal na po siya nakatira ngayon. May write up na po akong on the way to complement the invite. and may scanned copies po ako ng work niya if ever gusto niyo po makita. sana po makapunta kayo sa opening, siguradong matutuwa po siya.

    Sir Rod, ano po pala ang iyong last name? nakuwento ko po kase kay Mang Jess na nagpost nga kayo dito pero di niya lubos na matandaan (ang hula niya po ay kayo si Sir Rod Apostol).

    Kung may material din po kayo na gawa ni Mang Jess baka po pwde mahiram for the exhibit hehe :)

    Thanks for the reply. I was just wondering where this posting came from. Are you the owner of the gallery? My name is Rodolfo Samonte, Rod or Rudy for short, but Mang Jess probably won’t remember the young student who used to visit him in Balik-Balik roughly 45 years ago. I used to live there, still have our house there, but I live here in the U.S. now (Burbank, besides Los Angeles). Unfortunately, I don’t have anything by him. When I met him I was about to graduate from UST Fine Arts, and was soon busily involve in advertising and I never visited him again, sorry to say. He probably knows the late Manvir or Mannny Soriano, another Balik-balik neighbor, who was a good friend and who was also a komiks illustrator but also worked in advertising.     Pinakita po sakin ni Mang Jess un sketch niyo nung paalis na kayo papuntang states, lupet! un papel brown na dahil sobrang luma na haha galing, illustrator po pala kayo ng transformers…yes, the Filipino can! hehe

    Mang Rod, di na daw po maalala ni Mang Jess hehe hindi po ako un owner the gallery, nag reserve lang po ng spot to exhibit hehe lapet na po un exhibit.:)
