AS for Mr. Cholo Olauger, I totally agree with his point. Well-written and sensible. Hope everyone here can see it also.
As for the people who posted their comments, I read somewhere from a columnist in a well-known newspaper that appreciating art is somewhat subjective...from the way he wrote it, it seems that he's trying to defend CJC as a titleholder for National Artist title.

Lastly, if you're interested, you can read Mr.Penman's blog (www.penmanila.net)for more in-depth response about this National Artist problems. It even have an entry about a letter sent by a National Artist himself to NCCA about his proposal to improve the selection process of giving titles for more deserving artists.

Well said, Sir Gerry... As for me, CJC only has the trophy and the title, but not the recognition... Unfortunately for him, he has chosen to live with that lie.

I think it's best to ask Malacañang for their bases on making CJC a National Artist for Film and Visual Arts because the basis may not be those popular comics that are widely known now but rather his previous works as illustrator, or film being considered as a visual art. A work doesn't necessarily have to be popular to be considered. If this is a question of whether or not this is the first case of a National Artist who was considered through an override of the selection process, he is not the first one. Like what has been stated in the news, the National Artist is a presidential award, which is first and foremost to be given under the prerogative of the president. If you don't like the president's decision, you can clamor and protest, but it is ultimately the president who is the arbiter of the selection.

If you are protesting how the selection process wasn't followed, I suggest including all those National Artists who were chosen through an override of the nominations committee from Ramos up to present, as a matter of fairness. Although it seems that other National Artists are blowing whistles only now, which saddens me that their sense of law is delayed, much like the law's delay of which Shakespeare's Hamlet speaks of.

Anyway, before I end, I'd just like to say that basically, almost every National Artist, if not all, have used concepts that are borrowed and copied from other artists, but in the end they are still artists. If the basis of being an artist is originality, it is difficult to be original because so many techniques and concepts were already tried and tested from thousands of years ago. Every artist has to borrow concepts and techniques made by other artists, because obviously they did not invent all the techniques and concepts that they use. Philippine culture in itself is a culture which has borrowed concepts from so many other cultures, but the fact is, any culture also has many borrowed concepts.

On whether Caparas should be a National Artist, I will withhold my opinion since I do not know him or his works to present a valid opinion. I'm just trying to rebut some of the arguments made.

..I certainly agree!!!
..What matters is the content of the work. It is unhealthy for an artist to seek fame.
I hope nobody would ever put the words "Massacre" and "Filipino" together again..
..CAPARAS DOES NOT DESERVE THAT TITLE!!!!!

Funny when one really thinks about how artists are getting support for the recent "National Artist Scam" They felt they were robbed of their souls, I agree definitely but unfortunately one has to take into consideration that when we let a President the highest seating official in the country CHEAT in the last elections then we should've braced ourselves to the eventuality of a "National Artist Scam"
