Hiwaga ng Cadena de Amor, Tagalog Klasiks #1 Cover
Pencilled and Inked by LAN MEDINA
Eisner-award winning illustrator Lan Medina provides the cover for Tagalog Komiks #1, along with the accompanying short story within. This is only an example of the kind of art we can expect to see in a massive revival of Philippine komiks beginning next month.

Señor Don Alanguilan:
All I can say is: WOW!
Though I still want to see the younger generation komikeros to do regular work in the revived komiks. Sterling should welcome the young ones to do work for them and the RP komiks industry will once again be as glorious as it was when Coching, Redondo, Alcala, Alcantara, Carillo, Caguintuan, et al – were painstakingly doing their art as if every page they were doing were the last ones they will ever draw.
Wow. Itong art ni Medina makes me feel so ORGASMIC. He-he.
He-he.
while I have no problem with amazing art like that. The komiks that are coming out seem to harken back too much to the past. I hope that at least one tagalog title seeks to experiment with art styles and stories.
Grabe! Sobra’ng galing talaga ni Lan no? Classic na classic!

“Though I still want to see the younger generation komikeros to do regular work in the revived komiks.”
Hello JM!
Tama si Reno in saying that most of these artists have retired. When I talked to Mang Hal a few months ago, sabi nya ayaw na nya mag drawing. And it’s great no, seeing how a lot of these artists still have great passion in them for comics.
Later on, I think younger people will come in to take in the reins because there’s no other place new artists will come from but the younger generation. And Josel, when they come in (who knows you might be one of them), it will infuse the medium with new sensibilities and new artistic directions.
Ed, salamat nga pala.
With this kind of quality art coming from an international and world renound artist like Lan Medina. I felt heart broken for the compensation that they are getting. P500 a page(penciled and ink)? Anak ng patuka sa manok.
Sana man lamang may konting incentive. Royalties man lamang. Or hopefully they could raise the rate per page on the succeding months to come.
Gio, di ko sure kung talagang P500 ang page rate, kasi the only thing I heard was that the rate was a little better than Liwayway rates so it might be in that area.
In the old days, they actually got rate scales, and the artist got a rate which corresponds to his “ranking”. Class C, Class B, Class A, Class Super A. Those in the Super A category got the best rates. I don’t know if they have such a thing instituted now.
Lan is a Super double A, as far as I’m concerned.
Also, I’m not sure if it was instituted in local komiks, but artists should get a much higher page rate for covers.
This is my first time to see his work, and I’m impressed. It reminds me of the works of a Redondo clone, Nestor Leonidez. Kung baga sa basketball squad, this guy is definitely, a first-stringer, kaya dapat iba ang rate. Mr. Caparaz, are you reading this ?
Galing talaga…
Nakaka-inspire magdrawing…
Ah! Oo nga pala, speaking of cover rates…sana triple ang rate kung interior page is P500.
Gerry, no problem!

i just hope that the younger artists who are going to eventually replace the experienced masters aren’t just your run off the mill manga / anime hacks / copycats. if i remember correctly before the mass market komiks went kaput the art was mostly made up of evidently rushed cartoony manga / anime art. sana naman di bumalik sa ganon.
Cev, without turning this into a debate about art styles, this is simply something the Sterling representative told me about the subject, without having to discuss it with me. Although he assured me then that he does not make creative decisions, he did make an exception by stipulating that manga is something that will not be used in these komiks.
Hi Gerry,
Yung mas mataas sa Class A would be Class S. :)
Regarding naman sa younger creators, Mang Hal was inviting me to one of their meetings with Sterling last Friday. Mag-submit din daw ako. Di lang ako nakapunta kasi may work. Di naman sila “veterans only” club.
It looks so Pinoy, and very classical.
Wonderful work! I’ll be looking to pick up some of these new Komiks when I’m there in October!
I have long regarded many Pilipino comic artists’ as my favorites!
I have much respect for them and the work they have done. I understand that the amount of work they produced was becz of the low page rate, and needed to put out a lot of work, just to make a living…still…the work did not suffer. I’m amazed at the level of workmanship and detail many put into their work.
This cover is classic Pilipino! The drawing, design, etc…
Readership MUST be wide in varity of customers, not just teen boys! The girls market needs to be tapped, the older man and woman…I know that those Tagalog Romance pocket books are so popular, you have to compete with them for the money being spent to “read” a story!
The hard work is coming together now. I’m excited for you all there in the RP and hope it will be sucessful for the publisher.
Here in the USA, comics are only a source now for “movies” and “merchandise” the stories and art for the most part are not of a high quality.
I “love” the medium of comic books for telling stories…I only wish to see more of them done well!
Salamat, friends!

Maganda! Magayon!
Uragon ano boy ? nata ta daing Bicolanong nakalaog diyan ?
Auggie:
Matibay mag-drawing. Huyaon si Emil Rodriguez, si Fer Tenedora, si Carlos Baldorado, Floro Dery na aqui kan Kapre. Halata man si Rizaldy ta basi magbida man, ano Rizaldy. :)
Mapusta kamo? He-he.
JM,
Didn’t know that Charlie Baldorado & Fer Tenedora were from Bicol. Thanks for the info. Where are they now ?
Auggie and JML,
Wow! Naoogma ako ta igwang mga kapwa Bikolano digdi. I’m glad to know I have fellow Bikolanos who visit this website…this is really great news for me. Dios mabalos sa info about sa mga Bikolano Komikero, I will definitely research on the names you mentioned. In the same vein that Gerry Alanguilan was inspired when he discovered that Whilce Portacio is Filipino, I think many Bikolano kids will also be inspired to create and draw komiks if they have Bikolano idols. It is important that here in Bikol, we start giving due recognition to both veteran and contemporary komiks creators and illustrators:)
Zaldy,
Time to unleash the legendary Urag. You start with the epic HANDIONG, try to do some tweakings so that it can be adapted into comics form. Also time to do research on the Bicol mythological creatures to be adopted into graphic novels, example : The Tandayag. Also, some horror stuff incorporating the SANTIGWAR, into a story, ala Stephen King. Try to do a story that is visually compelling. Also do some reasearch on the ASTILLEROS ( Ship building of the world- class GALLEONS during the Galleon trade between Manila and Acapulco)in the Bicol peninsula, particularly along the coasts of Sorsogon, and Burias islands. You can write fiction about a Bicol Boy who rode the Galleon up to Mexico, into Spain. The possibilities are endless.
Thanks, Gerry, for letting us see Lan’s superb art.
Auggie,
Great, great advice, thanks for the very interesting insight!:)
Auggie,
Great advice, thanks for the insight!:)
glad komiks is back… i remember the days back on province when i use to “kupit” my mothers coin purse just to rent a komoks from a sari-sari store nearby… haaaays..
Ah, speaking of comics rental. I just hope there won’t be anymore like that when these great ones come out.
