Earlier today I was at SPUTNIK, a comics specialty shop located at the Cubao Shoe Expo (Formerly Marikina Shoe Expo) in Cubao, Quezon City. It’s co-owned by filmmakers Lyle Sacris and Quark Henares. It’s managed by a good friend of mine, Chez Fidelino.

I dropped by to deliver copies of ELMER 2-4, as well as draw.

Photos 2 and 3 are by Chez. Check out her Photography portfolio here.

Thanks to Chez and Paulo Fidelino for making my stay there very enjoyable. I’ll be back soon!

    Gerry,
Wow, ang dami na palang comics specialty stores diyan. Noong panahon ko wala. American comics were available only in bookstores like Alemar’s. Pilipino Komiks were available of course in newstands everywhere. And newboys sell it too, I should know I used to be a newsboy. Bakit may balabal and wrist mo? I hope wala kang carpel-tunnel syndrome.

Yep, great shop! A lot of items in their comic collection are rare ones too (can’t be found in other comic shops or bookstores as far as I can recall). I forgot to check out some items so I’ll definitely be returning there, I just have to make a short checklist first so I know what I’ll be looking for next time.

And yeah! awesome drawings again from the one and only Gerry! The finished drawing (Thanos vs. Darkseid) was superb! In my opinion, that was by far the “best” drawing that I have ever seen which was done on a “blank cover variant” in terms of being good-looking (eye-candy), uniqueness in approach, colors (definitely a unique way of coloring), shading, style, etc. and I have seen a whole lot of blank cover variant sketches/drawings..this one definitely stands out in there among the best. Different people = different opinions, and in my opinion, that was definitely “the best drawing done on a blank cover variant”.

I’ve enjoyed drawing for you Jun!

I like the front of the store. Parang yellow ebs! :P

  5. Gerry Alanguilan on March 18th, 2009 9:38 am

It only looks yellow because of the lighting, but it’s actually white. Oh yeah, sa mga balak pumunta dito sa Sputnik, office hours nya is from 4pm to 10pm.

    ganda ng facade!

Napadaan ako dati sa Sputnik kaso maaga pa kaya sarado pa ang tindahan. Kumain na lang kami sa Bellini’s.

I really need to go there one of these days since I want to have a copy of Nardong Tae.

  8. Charles Tan on March 18th, 2009 7:15 pm

To be fair to Ed, the store was designed, if I’m not mistaken, by Louie Cordero, who in turn created Nardong Tae. So the ebs comment has some weight (pero puting ebs, hindi dilaw).

  9. Charles Tan on March 18th, 2009 7:17 pm

I made a mistake! Si Leeroy New pala yung gumawa ng facade.

  10. dennis villegas on March 18th, 2009 7:41 pm

The facade was actually inspired by Louie Cordero’s Nardong Tae comic book, which Sputnik sells.

  12. Gerry Alanguilan on March 18th, 2009 9:41 pm

Dennis, andun pa ba yung tindahan mo? I think yun yun kasi familiar sa akin yung ale na nagbabantay.

  13. hazel m on March 18th, 2009 10:13 pm

there are still Elmer 1 left in festival mall- alabang comic quest

  14. dennis villegas on March 18th, 2009 10:55 pm

Yun nga…hehehe. Kaso di ko na mabantayan kaya yung tindera na lang lagi nandun.

  15. Gerry Alanguilan on March 19th, 2009 12:20 am

Thanks Hazel! I just knew there would still be copies there… :)
