Last Hope” is a story that I wrote, drew and colored for HOPE: HERO INITIATIVE, a benefit anthology to be published by Ronin Studios sometime this year. Hero Initiative is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping comic book professionals financially for emergency situations.

This idea of helping comics veterans in their time of financial need is a very good one, and I sorely wish that something like this would be established and organized in the Philippines, just like someone thought of organizing it in the US.

It’s easy to just go ahead and help, but it needs to be formalized and registered for it to be credible and impartial, criteria needs to be drawn up and fund raising measures planned and organized. This not as easy as it seems and believe me, something like this is a full time job.

Us in the creative field won’t be able to do this because we already have a job, and that’s creating comics. What we can do as writers and artists would be to help raise funds like donating artwork for auction, or providing stories for comics for the benefit of the fund.

Perhaps this could be made part of the Implementing Rules and Regulations of the two komiks bills pending in the Philippine Senate, where a body is formed specifically for this purpose.

If someone goes ahead and does this, I won’t hesitate to donate my creativity, as much as I have for Hero Initiative’s comics anthology. Because really, if there’s anyone I would like to help more then it’s my fellow Filipino artists.

yep, I also wish we’d have something like a “Hero Initiative” organization here in the Philippines who’d really help out comic book professionals specially in times of need or when they’re already on retirement.

I like the simplicity of this piece.
It even reminds me of that Oscar Wilde classic fantasy story, THE HAPPY PRINCE. It looks very classic, I mean.

The simple line work must be the reason why the finished work comes out popping right out of the page. It definitely is a case of less is more. And the color combination is truly stellar, reminiscent of a gifted architecth’s wonderful color schemes. Defintely 100/100%

Despite your busy sked of making BIDJOS (saan ba galing itong word na ito? Akala ko noong una, mispelling ng BANJOS! He-he), writing and drawing comic books, running here and there lecturing and restoring Coching’s work – I’m awondering how you still find the time to sleep or relax. I’d say you’re nuts, Alanguilan! LOL!

A word of advice from your lolo JM:
Don’t overwork yourself. Make sure to find some time to have a regular exercise and enough rest. We’ve seen a lot of tragic end to many komikeros in the past and we certainly don’t want to repeat that trend again. Especially not you.

Maybe you should make a video (I mean, bidjo)showcasing your daily exercise routine. Nagbi-bidjo ka na, nakaka-exercise ka pa. O, laban sila diyan?

I really admire this project Gerry.
    How did this came about?
I would love to do something like this in the future.
