Larger Than I Thought

In my previous post, I mentioned how huge Philippine comics will be in 2009 in terms of events. There’s the two Komikons, one in May and another in October, then there’s the Manila Comic-Con in August, Mangaholix in November, then the San Pablo Comics Festival in December.
After a meeting I had today with Mr. Hugo Yonzon (and others), it looks like 2009 is much MUCH larger than I first expected. I wish I could talk about it! But it’s got me very very excited. I promise to talk about it as soon as I can.

I delivered more copies of Elmer 2-4 to Comic Odyssey at Robinson’s Galleria this afternoon, just in time to catch Harvey Tolibao and Jay David Ramos at their signing. Congrats to Harvey and Jay on the release of their Darkhawk comic book!
After finishing Timawa for the March 2009 issue of The Buzz Magasin (available later this month), I’m back on “Last Hope”. I’ve managed to wrangle a few more days to do it from the editors. After that I go to work another short story for a Western anthology, this time with another writer.
And after that I will go write the script for “The Marvelous Adventures of the Amazing Doctor Rizal”. I’ve actually started drawing Rizal a while back with only the basic plot in mind, but I’ve had to stop because it didn’t feel right. In the same way I began drawing Elmer back in 2005 and it didn’t feel right. I have to write the story completely from start to finish and once I feel good about the pacing and the dialogue, I’ll start drawing it.

Gerry,
Which one is Harvey and which one is Jay? What happened to Bong Dazo? He’s Pinoy also, right? and I believe he was co-penciller with Harvey.
Rod
Si Harvey yung nasa pinaka left and si Jay yung nasa tabi nya. Bong wasn’t there…
To think that Harvey used to draw local Cebu comics, and now he’s doing it for the Big M. Gotta pick up Darkhawk and check out his work.
Hi sir Gerry!
It was great seeing you this afternoon!
Is it okay if I copy this pic and post it in my blog?
Salamat ulet sir!
Regards,
— Jay

Hello Don. Sorry ha? Pwede paki buo ang mga salita mo, kasi hindi ko maintindihan e. Dito ka na lang mag iwan ng message kasi wala akong cellphone.
Friend Gerry,
My name is Raúl (alias Raule) and I am a Spanish comic book writer. This is not the first time I write you. I visit the Philippines in July (my wife is filipina and will be my third trip to your country) and I want to know if there is a festival of comics at that time. I would also very excited to visit you in San Pablo (the family of my wife live in Sucat, Muntinlupa City). Congratulations by your incredible art and your website of filipino artist.
a big hug, amigo!

Hey Raul! There’s a large comics convention happening n August 8-9 at Megatrade Hall in Megamall. I hope you’re still around by that time. I’m sure you could work it out! A lot of guys would certainly love to meet you and see your work. :D
No, no, friend, I only be in july. What a pity!
But anyway, can I go to visit you? In june I send you a mail with my cellphone and direction in Sucat, 0k?
Thanx for all, Gerry!
Hey Raul! Let’s just email as I don’t use a cellphone. Still, July and August are still very far away. Surely you could reschedule? If not, sure, let’s meet up in July. You can send me messages at gerryalanguilan at yahoo dot com.
I can´t change the date, sorry. I don´t live to write comics, Gerry, I have a “real” job… and the holidays are in July.
I hope we´ll meet a time to see us, talk and drink a beer (or two!, jeje).
Regards from Barcelona!
Ahhh, I see Sandy and Rowena! :) I miss you guys. I wish I was there too.
:(
I hope everyone is OK and looks like everyone was happy and having a great time!!!
Sayang, Gerry di ko alam na pupunta ka. Ipapadala ko sana yung cover ng Wolverine na nasa yo. Pero okay lang, para may reason pa rin ako pumunta sa San Pablo. Wehehe. :D
Hola Raule !
Como esta ? I would like to know whether my favorite Barcelona artists are still around, Jose Ortiz, Esteban Maroto , Luis Bermejo, Leopold Sanchez etc. are they still productive ? please advice, por favor.
What are the hottest comics out of Barcelona now ?
Friend Auggie,
The great artists who you comment are alive, but they are older and no productive. All the good comic artist are now working for Europe or USA (Jordi Bernet, Ruben Pellejero, Alfonso Font, etc) and another young artists too (Pasqual Ferry, Carlos Pacheco, Javier Pulido, Roger Ibañez, Jose Luis Munuera, etc).
Regards!
Amigos Raule y Auggie,
Actually, I still see Bermejo in comics here in the US, but he’s only doing covers, still excellent. There was a time when all of those Spanish artists Auggie mentions were competing head to head with illustratiors from the Philippines. No question, Spaniards are excellent illustrators. Pasqual Ferry is one of my favorites and I have a collection of his comics. Fantastic illustrator. I looked at your blog and Jazz Maynard looks like an excellent comics with great illustration.

Mi Amigos Raule Y Rod,
Could you post some samples of works of the juvenes illustradores del Barcelona ? I am not familiar with their works. I got a Spanish version of LORD OF THE RINGS by Bermejo, long before the movie came out. Unfortunately,it’s just Part I.
Raule, when you visit the Philipines in July, could you bring these fantastic works of both the old & the new Barcelona artists ? just leave it with Maestro Gerry, he will take care of it.
Hasta Luego !
Amigos Auggie y Rod,
This is my mail: jazzmaynard@hotmail.com
You can write me and I send you pictures of very good spanish artists of all styles.
Gerry, sorry for the inconvenience and use your website as a forum, jajaja.
A big hug!
