Carlo Vergara and Reno Maniquis have illustrated one story each in the new edition of Graphic Classics: Ambrose Bierce.

Carlo Vergara illustrated “The Monk and The Hangman’s Daughter”,

…while Reno Maniquis illustrated “The Damned Thing”.

Congrats to Carlo and Reno for representing the Philippines among the best of the world’s comics artists!

Carlo Vergara, as you know, created the incredibly popular Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah, the musical adaptation of it will begin a new run nexth month at the Little Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

He is also working on a *new* Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah adventure, which he has been previewing on his blog.

Reno Maniquis is the creator of Maskarado, and has been drawing for Philippine comics since the 1980s! Believe it or not, he’s younger than I am so that means he has been drawing comics here in the Philippines when he was just a little boy! Amazing eh Reno?

Reno and Carlo, inspite of the absence of any major comics publisher in the Philippines, went ahead and took the risk of publishing their comics on their own. Carlo published the first edition of “Ang Kagila-Gilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah” in two parts, while Reno published eight issues of Maskarado.

These are TWO of the artists who are among those who are truly keeping the Philippine comics industry alive.

    Gerry,
Just previous to this you showed us the amazing illustrations of Mico Suayan and Jay Anacleto, then there was Elber Or. Now here’s Carlo Vergara, who I definitely know and another artist I’ve never even heard of before – Reno Maniquis. Then there’s the, at least, 20 Pinoy artists working in American Comics top headed by Leinil Yu. Why there is no dearth of Philippine comics at all. There are more Pilipino comics illustrators now than there was ever before. Philippine comics is more than alive.

Maniniwala ka ba na idol ko ‘tong dalawang artists na ‘to? :D

It is, Rod! What is great is, even though a lot of these artists are working abroad, myself included, a lot of them still do comics, however they can, here in the Philippines, even though there’s no longer any real publisher. Even big timers like Leinil Yu and Carlo Pagulayan still contribute to a few local projects every now and then.

    Gerry,
New names keep popping up. I’m sure there are more artists that are working that I have not heard of yet. Big time na talaga itong si Leinil, he shares equal billing with the writer (I think it says Bendis and Yu) now in New Invasions. Kung baga sa artista sa pelikula, his name is above the title.
BTW, a Spiderman comics is out with President-elect Obama on the cover, wherein Spiderman saves Obama from an assassin during his inauguration. Grab a copy if you can. It’s HOT, HOT, HOT. Which means you can’t get it at cover price anymore, if it’s even available. A second printing is coming, but the First Edition is what’s valuable.

That’s true Rod! There are a few that I’ve been seeing in the past few years that show real potential like Bong Leal, Ian Sta. Maria, Kajo Baldisimo, Novo Maglapo and so on. Novo is the son of Nestor Malgapo pala.

    Gerry,
Speaking of sons, there’s an illustrator working in comics here whose name is Bruno Redondo. Any relation to the Redondo’s? There’s so many Spanish-named illustrators, it’s hard to tell which are Pinoys. For example there’s a Billy Tan, but I don’t think he’s Pinoy.

Rod, I don’t know about Bruno, but there is a Redondo working in comics who doesn’t appear to be related to Nestor. Jesus Redondo… he often contributes to British comics.

Thanks for the kind words, Gerry! Thanks for featuring us on your site! And it’s good to be in such great company with you, Carlo and Arnold who all have worked for GRAPHIC CLASSICS. I’m doing something for them again this year, and this time Dave Hontiveros is my writer. Funny how it took a US publisher to get us to work on a project together. :)

Yung latest issue ng Avengers/Invaders, co-penciller ang isang Patrick Berkenkotter. Is this the same Patrick Berkenkotter who drew the Seasnake story in the now-defunct SIKLAB magazine? Pinoy siya, di ba?

    Rod–
Hindi kaanu-anong mga Redondo si Bruno. tinanong ko din ito sa kanila, hindi daw nila kamag anak.

    Reno–

Yup, si Patrick nga yun :)

Congrats to Carlo and Reno. I’m a big fan of your works. You make us all proud as Filipinos!

By the way, regarding the cover of this edition of Graphic Classics, I think this is one of the sloppiest covers I’ve ever seen in quite awhile.
